When purchasing home building materials, people usually just look at the price and ask about the quality. Unless they pay special attention, they usually don't focus on the type of board. However, the type of board often relates to the environmental friendliness and quality of wooden doors. Therefore, it is helpful to understand some knowledge about boards to select better quality wooden doors or home building materials.

Do you know what kind of wood panels are used for your wooden doors?

I. Types of Boards

1. Solid wood board

As the name suggests, solid wood boards are wood panels made from whole pieces of timber. These boards are sturdy, durable, and have natural grain, making them a top choice for interior design. However, due to their high cost and demanding construction techniques, they are not commonly used in interior decoration.

2. Plywood

Plywood, also known as laminated board or thin-core board in the industry, is made of three or more layers of 1 mm thick veneers or thin sheets glued and hot-pressed together. It is currently the most commonly used material for handmade furniture. Plywood is generally divided into six specifications: 3 mm, 5 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, and 18 mm (1 mm is 1 mm).

3. Decorative panels

Decorative panels, commonly known as veneers, are made by precisely slicing solid wood boards into thin veneers approximately 0.2mm thick. They represent a special type of plywood, with a thickness of 3mm. Decorative panels are currently a high-end decorative material distinct from painted finishes.

4. Plywood

Blockboard, commonly known in the industry as core board, is made by gluing and pressing two veneers together with a core of spliced wood panels. Blockboard is cheaper than plywood, but it has lower vertical (distinguished by the direction of the core material) bending and compressive strength, while having higher horizontal bending and compressive strength.

5. Particleboard

Thin boards made from wood chips, glued, and with additives, are pressed together. Based on the pressing method, they can be divided into two categories: extruded particleboard and flat-pressed particleboard. The main advantage of this type of board is its extremely low price. Its disadvantages are also obvious: extremely poor strength. It is generally unsuitable for making larger furniture or furniture with structural requirements.

6. MDF (Medium-density fiberboard)

Also known as fiberboard. It is a type of engineered wood product made from wood fibers or other plant fibers bonded together with suitable adhesives. MDF (Medium-density Fiberboard) is soft, impact-resistant, and easy to process. Abroad, it is a good material for furniture making. However, domestic standards for MDF in China are several times lower than international standards, therefore, the quality of MDF used in China needs improvement .

7. Fireproof board

Decorative panels are made primarily from siliceous or calcareous materials, mixed with a certain proportion of fiber materials, lightweight aggregates, adhesives, and chemical additives. They are a widely used new type of material. Environmentally friendly and fire-resistant, they are therefore more expensive than decorative panels.
