Rainy weather, with increased heavy rain and storms, concentrated and heavy rainfall, short hours of sunshine, and high humidity, are inherent characteristics of the plum rain season. Recently, Zhejiang has entered a period of damp and sticky weather. Besides concerns about inconvenience when going out and slow-drying clothes, many homeowners who are renovating are also worried about the quality of construction work during the plum rain season. Today, we've compiled a list of common renovation problems and preventative measures to help you complete your renovations smoothly during the plum rain season.
01 Plumbing and Electrical Installation Standards
Special attention must be paid to electrical wiring during the rainy season. Because walls and floors are prone to dampness, bare wires should not be buried directly in them. Instead, they must be encased in protective insulated conduits to prevent damage later. Especially in areas prone to rain, such as balconies, exposed copper wire ends must be properly insulated to prevent short circuits caused by moisture. Before installation, wall and floor insulation measures must be implemented to protect against moisture.
02. Choose materials carefully.
Because wood products are most prone to warping, especially during the rainy season, extra care should be taken when choosing wood products for home renovation. Materials with low water absorption and a low deformation coefficient should be selected. For example, solid wood flooring should be from reputable brands, such as TBB (Tu Bao Bao), whose boards and flooring meet national standards. The warping of wood flooring is determined by its water absorption rate, and the water rebound rate is directly related to its baking process. If purchasing engineered wood flooring, choose products with good water resistance. Laminate flooring, due to its processing, is less prone to warping. Under normal circumstances, the moisture content of the boards should not be too high or too low. National regulations stipulate that the moisture content of standard boards should not exceed 12%. After checking the moisture content of the boards during the rainy season and confirming it is within acceptable limits, be sure to put the flooring back in its original packaging and wrap it in plastic sheeting; otherwise, the flooring will absorb moisture from the indoor air and warp.
03. Maintain good ventilation.
Because walls are very damp during the plum rain season, it's important to prevent the backs of furniture from getting damp. On rainy days, when the air is humid, all doors and windows should be opened during construction to maintain good indoor ventilation. This is not only beneficial to the health of the construction workers but also helps the interior walls, floors, and wood to dry as quickly as possible.
04. Allow the putty to dry completely.
Before painting the walls, you need to apply a layer of putty, usually 1-3 coats. The normal drying time is 1-2 days. However, on rainy days, when applying putty, wipe the wall surface dry with a clean cloth to keep it as dry as possible. Also, depending on the actual weather conditions, extend the drying time of the putty as much as possible, generally 2-3 days, until it is completely dry.
It is clear that the impact of the rainy season on home renovation is limited. There is no need to be alarmed by the rainy season. Just pay attention to the precautions and renovate with peace of mind!
