OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is one of the commonly used materials for whole-house customization. Once it deforms, it becomes a major headache, affecting not only daily use but also the aesthetics of the entire house.
Today, Qiangyi will explain the reasons for OSB board warping. Please read carefully to avoid making the same mistakes!
1. The quality of the boards is substandard.
The quality of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) varies greatly. If a poor-quality OSB is selected, it is easy for deformation problems to occur.
Some small manufacturers produce OSB (Oriented Strand Board) boards, which may use wood with excessively high moisture content or fail to control temperature and pressure properly during the hot-pressing process, resulting in unstable internal structure of the boards.
Under normal circumstances, the moisture content of OSB should be controlled between 6% and 14%. Once it exceeds this range, the board will expand or contract due to fluctuations in moisture content as the ambient humidity changes, which will lead to deformation.
2. Improper installation and construction
If no expansion space is reserved during installation, when the OSB board expands due to changes in temperature or humidity, it will have nowhere to stretch, thus generating internal stress and causing the board to deform.
For example, when installing OSB boards for wall decoration, a gap of 3-5 mm should be left between the boards to accommodate their expansion and contraction.
3. Environmental factors
humidity
When the ambient humidity is too high or too low for an extended period of time, OSB will absorb or release moisture, which can cause dimensional changes.
For example, during the plum rain season in southern China, the air humidity often reaches over 80%. In such a high-humidity environment, OSB boards are easily affected by moisture and deformed if proper moisture-proofing measures are not taken.
temperature
OSB boards exhibit significant expansion and contraction due to temperature variations.
For example, under alternating conditions of high summer temperatures and low winter temperatures, OSB boards frequently expand and contract due to temperature changes, which can eventually lead to deformation.
4. Improper use and maintenance
load-bearing capacity
Placing excessively heavy objects on OSB boards, exceeding the board's load-bearing capacity, will cause the boards to bend and deform.
maintain
If OSB boards are not cleaned and maintained regularly, excessive accumulation of surface stains and dust may affect the breathability of the boards, thereby affecting their internal humidity balance and causing deformation.
That's all for today's sharing. In the next episode, Qiangyi will share methods to prevent OSB board warping. Stay tuned if you're interested!
