The Origin of the Bathtub

From the Qin and Han dynasties onwards, ancient people used wooden tubs for bathing, as well as "earth pots" that were heated while bathing. These were made of iron and used firewood underneath to keep the water warm. Both wooden tubs and earth pots were the precursors to modern freestanding bathtubs.

The earliest bathtubs were made of wood lined with lead, followed by marble bathtubs. From the 18th century onwards, metal bathtubs became popular, the most common material being tin-plated copper, whose greatest advantage was its rust resistance. The interior of the bathtub could be tin-plated, or even silver-plated. Some bathtubs, crafted with joinery, were veritable antique furniture, with backrests or cushions, taking the form of sofas or benches, for single or double use. In the late 18th century, the famous wooden shoe bathtub appeared, composed of more than twenty metal pieces, named for its shoe-like shape, featuring a funnel for filling and a faucet for draining.

The comforts of modern bathrooms originated in 19th-century England with the advent of bathtubs designed for wave bathing, which eventually evolved into enclosed shower rooms. By the end of the century, the new material cast iron emerged, and "cast iron bathtubs" were cast. However, early cast iron bathtubs not only had right angles at the corners but were also rough and uneven in thickness. By the 1880s, craftsmen had finally mastered the technique of rounding the uncomfortable right angles, and a few years later, they solved the problems of glazing and uneven thickness. The cast iron bathtub truly became a product that remains impeccable to this day.

Over time, the materials used for freestanding bathtubs have evolved from wood to cast iron, ceramic, steel, and acrylic, and their shapes have also changed considerably, but the purpose remains the same: to make bathing more comfortable. Beyond its natural character, the unchanging spirit of bathing within the tub has endured for thousands of years, imbuing it with a classical charm.
