definition
Particleboard, also known as chipboard, is a type of engineered wood product made by cutting various branches, small-diameter wood, fast-growing timber, wood chips, etc. into fragments of a certain size, drying them, mixing them with adhesives, hardeners, waterproofing agents, etc., and pressing them under certain temperature and pressure. Its particles are not evenly arranged.
raw material
The raw materials for making particleboard include two categories: wood or wood fiber materials, adhesives, and additives. The former accounts for more than 90% of the dry weight of the board. Urea-formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin are commonly used adhesives. The former has a light color, a low curing temperature, and good bonding effect on particleboard made from various plant materials such as wheat straw and rice husks. The hot-pressing temperature is 195–210℃.
Advantages
1. High cost-performance ratio and low cost. Particleboard furniture costs less than half the price of plywood furniture of similar size.
2. Easy nail holding. Compared to MDF (medium-density fiberboard), particleboard has better nail holding power, and it is easy to process (cut, drill, mill, etc.), bond, and paint. It is also easy to obtain the required dimensions.
3. Environmentally friendly and renewable. It is an environmentally friendly material, with raw materials mainly coming from inter-forest logging, small-diameter timber (usually less than 8cm in diameter), logging residues, and wood processing residues. It is processed into flakes, strips, needles, granules, wood chips, sawdust, etc., which are called scrap materials.
Particleboard Selection
1. Wood materials used. High-quality particleboard has relatively uniform wood chips in size and color, while inferior particleboard often has a lot of waste materials added during processing, affecting the overall quality of the board.
2. Manufacturing Process. When distinguishing particleboard, you can check if its layers are clear, and high-quality particleboard has smaller gaps and is more compact overall. Inferior particleboard will be very loose.
3. Environmental protection level. Domestically produced wood-based panels meeting the E1 formaldehyde emission standard are considered qualified environmentally friendly products, while high-quality particleboard generally reaches E0 level or higher. Additionally, you can distinguish them by smell; check for any pungent glue odor.
