An old saying goes, "Every household is shrouded in rain during the plum rain season," a line of poetry that perfectly describes the plum rain season in June. After the plum rain season begins, the Jiangnan region is as hot as a steam room, clothes become damp, and the ground is wet. This humid environment will put wooden floors to a great test.
Damage to wood flooring caused by moisture
Floor warping and mold
During the rainy season, high humidity causes wooden floors to absorb a lot of moisture, leading to irregular expansion and warping. A damp environment is also a breeding ground for mold, making the floors prone to mildew.
Wood Floor Moisture Prevention and Maintenance Guide
01. Close windows promptly to block moisture.
Rain increases outdoor humidity, so it's important to close windows promptly, especially those facing south and southeast. This prevents rainwater from soaking the floor and also blocks moisture from entering the room, thus avoiding floor warping.
02. Electrically assisted internal and external ventilation
Wood flooring can better exert its natural warm and moist properties in an environment with suitable temperature and humidity, and a well-ventilated and dry environment is the most suitable.
If it's raining continuously and there's no chance to see the sun, you can use air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heaters, and other equipment to dehumidify and keep the optimal temperature between the human body and the floor at 23℃±2℃, and the humidity at 50%RH-60%RH.
03. Air conditioners should not blow directly onto the floor.
When using an air conditioner to dehumidify, be careful that the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors is not too high, and do not point the air conditioner vent directly at the floor. The floor is prone to deformation when the temperature and humidity change rapidly, so avoid the rapid evaporation of moisture inside the floor, which can cause it to shrink and deform.
04. Keep moisture-proof accessories at home.
During the rainy season, keep plenty of desiccants, moisture-proof bags, and dehumidifiers at home. Place them in easily overlooked corners such as sofas, corners, under beds, kitchen cabinets, and wardrobes to absorb moisture and remove odors. Newspapers are also a great dehumidifier; they are inexpensive, absorb water easily, and the ink smell is a natural insect repellent.
05. Regular waxing and daily maintenance
Regardless of whether it is the rainy season or not, wood floors should be waxed regularly. While protecting the appearance of the finish, waxing can also prevent moisture from penetrating the floor during the rainy season.
06. Warm salt water helps the floor dry faster when mopping.
Keep the floor dry during daily use. Never use a wet mop that hasn't been wrung out properly in humid weather. When washing the mop, add 2-3 tablespoons of salt to the bucket, soak the mop for 5 minutes, wring it out, and then mop. This will speed up the drying process.
