How safe are flame-retardant OSB boards? The data tells you the truth.

2025-11-04

When a fire breaks out, how much time do we have to escape? 10 minutes? 5 minutes?

In fact, the "golden time" for escaping a fire is only 90 seconds! With such a short time, how can we effectively suppress open flames when a fire breaks out? How can we slow down the spread of open flames? How can we reduce the release of toxic and harmful gases from decorative materials? These are all key factors in gaining more escape time.

To prevent fires before they start, reduce the harm of toxic fumes, and save more lives, we need safer, more professional, and fire-retardant building materials for interior decoration, allowing as much time and conditions as possible for escape.

Recently, we visited the laboratory to conduct various tests on Qiannianzhou's newly developed flame-retardant OSB board. How does it truly perform? Can it prevent fires and buy more time for lives? Let's find out!

Appearance Review

Compared to other boards, formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS boards are not smooth. The surface slices are crisscrossed, with clear textures and a strong wood feel. On a single board, you can even see an entire forest, more like an abstract painting.

As explained, this crisscrossing grain pattern is precisely the charm of oriented strand board (OSB) technology. Oriented strand board refers to a board where the core layer is arranged horizontally and the surface layer vertically, with the surface wood chips oriented along the length or width of the board. It is precisely this crisscrossing arrangement that restructures the wood grain, eliminating the impact of internal wood stress on processing. As a result, OSB boards offer superior performance compared to ordinary particleboard, with significantly improved nail-holding power and moisture resistance.

The thickness of the board directly affects its flatness and performance. We tested the board thickness twice on-site, obtaining 12mm and 11.9mm results (considering measurement error), consistent with the stated dimensions. In fact, due to varying needs in home decoration and construction, formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS boards can be customized to meet diverse consumer requirements.

Fire resistance and flame retardant test

To understand the fire-retardant performance of formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS boards, testers used a blowtorch to conduct a burning test on ordinary OSB shavings and flame-retardant OSB board shavings. Comparing the burning effects, it can be seen that both boards ignited under the powerful blowtorch. When the blowtorch was stopped, the ordinary shavings still had open flames, and the fire showed a tendency to spread; while the flames on the formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS board extinguished immediately after the blowtorch was stopped, and did not spread.

The experiment showed that the flame-retardant OSB board has excellent flame-retardant properties, which can effectively curb and slow down the spread of fire and prevent fires from occurring.

The new generation of flame-retardant OSB board is made from imported pine wood sliced into sheets. It changes the traditional coating/immersion process for large boards and adopts a small-sheet spraying method with up to 120 three-dimensional nozzles spraying at high speed. The flame retardant penetrates into every tiny pore, perfectly achieving B1 rating for greater safety.

Stability test

As a building material, the stability of wood panels is also very important. Only when they are sturdy, durable, and not easily deformed can a more perfect decorative effect be guaranteed.

Therefore, we also tested the flatness and load-bearing capacity of the flame-retardant OSB board. Professional instruments confirmed that the flame-retardant OSB board can withstand 360N. This excellent load-bearing capacity is inseparable from its first-class production line and manufacturing process. The flame-retardant OSB board is produced using an advanced German Industry 4.0 automated production line, subjected to high temperature and high pressure, ensuring static bending strength and bonding strength, making it sturdy, durable, and resistant to deformation.

At the same time, we measured the appearance of the boards. The appearance was flat and uniform, with small deviations in density and thickness, which facilitates construction and ensures construction quality.

Waterproofing test

Over time, wood panels are most susceptible to moisture damage, especially in relatively humid environments like kitchens. Moisture can cause warping and bending, and it also promotes mold growth, shortening the panel's lifespan and posing health risks to users.

We tested the moisture resistance of flame-retardant OSB boards by measuring the water absorption thickness expansion rate. First, we prepared six samples of the same size, and measured and labeled the thickness of each sample in detail.

Six samples were placed in water and soaked for 24 hours. Compared to their original thickness, the thickness expansion rate after 24 hours of water absorption was only 3.2%, far below the national standard of 20%. The flame-retardant OSB board has excellent moisture-proof performance and is sufficient to cope with various humid environments.

The reason for its excellent moisture-proof performance is that the MDI adhesive used has the property of not being easily soluble in water. During the hot pressing process of production, the MDI adhesive reacts chemically with the water molecules in the wood, effectively preventing moisture from entering the core material. It is very suitable for use in indoor spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms where there are special requirements for waterproofing and moisture-proofing.

Formaldehyde test

In recent years, news of illnesses caused by excessive formaldehyde levels has frequently topped trending searches, making the environmental performance of home building materials increasingly important to people. To conduct formaldehyde testing, we went to a professional laboratory and used a specialized climate chamber method to test the flame-retardant OSB boards.

After equilibration, the samples were sealed at the edges and then placed in a 1 m³ climate chamber with a temperature of (23±0.5)℃, relative humidity of (50±3)%, air velocity of (0.1-0.3) m/s, and air exchange rate of (1.0±0.05) h⁻¹.

Periodically extract the air from the chamber and pass it through an absorption bottle filled with distilled water; the formaldehyde in the air will dissolve in the water. This extraction process is cyclical until the formaldehyde concentration in the air within the climate chamber reaches a stable state.

After obtaining the formaldehyde sample, we conducted a comparative test using distilled water, reacting it chemically with a 0.4% acetylacetone solution (volume ratio) and a 20% ammonium acetate solution (mass ratio). Subsequently, both were placed in a digitally displayed constant-temperature water bath, with the bath temperature reaching 60°C, and heated for ten minutes.

After being stored in the dark for one hour, the absorbance was measured using a visible spectrophotometer, revealing a formaldehyde concentration of 0.01 mg/m³. This superior environmental performance is due to the use of a new generation of formaldehyde-free MDI adhesive in the flame-retardant OSB board. The adhesive itself contains no formaldehyde, and no formaldehyde is added during the board's manufacturing process, thus reducing formaldehyde release at its source.

Evaluation Summary--

Fire prevention is better than disaster relief. Reducing fire occurrences and minimizing loss of life and property requires not only heightened fire safety awareness but also the use of high-quality, safe decorative materials.
