If you're a local from Liuzhou, you've probably heard this story. During the Tang Dynasty, when Liu Zongyuan served as the prefect of Liuzhou, in the tenth year of the Yuanhe era, a virtuous magistrate from Rongshui died, his family unable to even afford a coffin. Moved by his character, Liu Zongyuan reported his deeds to Emperor Xianzong, who then ordered a grand funeral. Liu Zongyuan personally went to Rongshui to arrange the magistrate's funeral, but couldn't find suitable timber for a coffin. Suddenly, he heard someone mention a thousand-year-old fragrant cedar on Xishan Mountain in Rong'an. Zongyuan rushed to Rong'an and found a thousand-year-old cedar on Xishan Mountain, so large that it would take six people to encircle it. Zongyuan ordered it to be cut down, but the ancient tree seemed to possess a spirit; it wouldn't fall even after being cut. Having no other choice, Liu Zongyuan returned to the foot of the mountain, bathed and changed his clothes, prepared offerings, and went again to the thousand-year-old fragrant cedar. He burned incense and prayed for the reason for cutting it down. After the ceremony, the thousand-year-old fragrant cedar slowly fell and floated down the Rongjiang River to Rongshui. Zong Yuan arranged for a coffin to be made from a single piece of wood to bury the magistrate of Rongshui County, and the coffin has not decayed to this day. Thus, the saying "Eat in Guangzhou, die in Liuzhou" became a timeless tale, and the fragrant cedars of Rong'an became famous throughout the world.
