Popular Science | The Correct Way to Use OSB, the "Future Board"

2025-11-04

In recent years, oriented strand board (OSB) has quietly emerged in the home decoration industry, and some design-oriented furniture companies have begun to use OSB in furniture production. For example, City Window Furniture held a press conference in Dongguan, announcing that it is using OSB to manufacture furniture and leading the trend of green furniture; and Bluebird Furniture from Hebei is also using imported OSB to make furniture, with good sales and gradually opening up the consumer market.

One significant reason why OSB (Oriented Strand Board) has not been widely accepted and produced in China is the lack of understanding among businesses and users regarding its performance and applications. However, with the increasing number of companies involved in OSB production in recent years, and the strengthening and popularization of promotional activities, OSB has gradually been applied in fields such as home decoration, wooden construction, packaging, and furniture manufacturing. Data from Baidu searches for OSB shows approximately 1.7 million results for the Chinese name "Oriented Strand Board." From a market perspective, the growth momentum of OSB is considerable.

Basic characteristics of OSB

The raw materials for OSB (Organic Strand Board) are mainly small-diameter coniferous and broad-leaved timber, as well as fast-growing thinned timber, such as pine, poplar, eucalyptus, and fir thinned timber. The raw material sources are relatively wide, and it can be manufactured into large-format panels. Its manufacturing process mainly involves drying geometrically shaped planks (typically 50-80mm long, 5-20mm wide, and 0.45-0.6mm thick), applying adhesive, oriented, and hot-pressing them. Compared to other engineered wood products, OSB production is technically more complex and requires significant investment in infrastructure, primarily utilizing imported equipment. Furthermore, producing high-quality OSB generally requires a continuous flat-pressing line, necessitating at least several hundred million yuan in start-up capital, thus presenting a high barrier to entry for production.

OSB's superior performance

Compared to plywood, MDF, and blockboard, OSB has a lower coefficient of linear expansion, better stability, more uniform material, and higher screw-holding power. Because its shavings are arranged in a certain direction, its longitudinal bending strength is much greater than its transverse strength, so it can be used as a structural material and load-bearing component. In addition, it can be processed like wood, such as sawing, sanding, planing, drilling, nailing, and filing, making it a good material for building structures, interior decoration, and furniture manufacturing.

Widespread use of OSB

As one of the most promising engineered wood products for the future, OSB has a wide range of applications and development potential. This product is mainly used in the following areas: flooring, walls and roofing; I-beams; structural partitions; packaging boxes; pallets and storage boxes; merchandise shelves; industrial tabletops; hardwood flooring cores; decorative wall panels; on-site concrete molding formwork; container flooring; bowling alleyways, etc. After processing, it can replace plywood, veneer plywood, formwork, fireproof boards, decorative boards, and MDF. It can also be used as a lining between solid wood flooring and joists, or as retaining walls, trench formwork, and baseboards in construction; after being veneered (with veneer or melamine paper), OSB can be used as panels, drawer bottoms, cabinet shelves, floorboards, bed boards, etc. in furniture manufacturing.

More possibilities for OSB

For designers, understanding new materials is essential. OSB manufacturing technology is now quite mature. When designing board structures, designers can create smooth surfaces for direct painting and veneer application; use stained wood shavings for decoration; or use larger shavings as a surface laminate to create a natural wood feel and texture, suitable for diverse design requirements. Several years ago at the Cologne Materials Fair in Germany, furniture designers used OSB to design furniture, finishing it with varnish, creating a remarkably unique effect.

People are advocating "Cherish life, don't do drugs".

Little did we know that a kind of "poison" was permeating our lives.

The incubation period can last for more than ten years, seriously threatening lives.
