Wood has always played a very important role in the lives of Chinese people. It is mild and natural, highly malleable, and can be used for furniture, utensils, and home decoration materials. Flooring is one of the most commonly used wooden home decoration materials today.
Good solid wood flooring can last for several years with proper maintenance, but the life of flooring is not unlimited. Natural factors such as sunlight, air, and seasonal changes will affect the lifespan of solid wood flooring.
As winter approaches, the weather becomes increasingly dry. Improper maintenance can lead to problems such as cracking in the floor. This floor care guide can help consumers properly maintain their floors during winter and extend their lifespan.
01. Maintain humidity
Winter weather is dry with relatively low humidity, causing the wood fibers in wood flooring to shrink naturally due to moisture loss. If the flooring's moisture content is too low, it can lead to cracking and gaps at the joints. Homeowners can wipe the floor with a damp cloth two to three times a week, or use a small humidifier to keep the floor moisturized.
The new five-layer engineered wood flooring has been upgraded from the traditional multi-layer substrate to a three-layer substrate, with a stabilizing and balancing layer added at the top and bottom. The symmetrical stabilizing layer forms the main body, supplemented by a solid wood decorative surface layer and a beech wood moisture-proof and balancing bottom layer. Because of the two stabilizing and balancing layers at the top and bottom, the internal stress of the wood is effectively controlled through an interlocking mechanical structure, greatly reducing the chance of floor deformation. It can easily cope with problems such as cracking and warping in cold, dry winters.
02. Switching on and off the geothermal heating system should be done gradually.
With the recent drop in temperature, many households with underfloor heating have already turned it on. To prevent damage to the flooring from sudden temperature changes, it's important to gradually increase the temperature before turning on the underfloor heating for the first time. Increase the temperature by no more than 3°C per day to allow the wood flooring sufficient time to adjust and prevent it from expanding or warping due to rapid heating. The same principle applies when turning off the underfloor heating.
Solid wood underfloor heating flooring features temperature-regulating modification technology, ensuring stable resistance to underfloor heat. The stepped temperature adjustment helps balance the wood's properties, preserving its natural vitality. Stepping onto the floor, you can feel the rich warmth emanating from beneath your feet.
03. Reduce sun exposure
Winter sunshine is bright and pleasant, and people often open their curtains to enjoy it at home. However, it's important to note that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight on floors is harmful. Although winter sunlight isn't as intense as summer sunlight, long-term exposure can still cause discoloration and surface aging of the floor, and may even lead to moisture loss, shrinkage, and separation. Therefore, when a home is unoccupied for extended periods, it's advisable to take measures to protect the floor from sunlight, such as installing blackout curtains or laying down carpets or other soft furnishings.
Each floorboard undergoes an extended 180-day curing process to release residual internal stress, precisely control moisture content, and enhance stability. Even when exposed to direct sunlight, it is less prone to warping or buckling.
04. Waxing and maintenance
In winter, indoor air is dry, and many people choose to increase the frequency of waxing to make their floors more moisturized and shiny. Waxing can isolate the floor from the air, reducing damage caused by oxidation or contact with harmful substances in the air. However, it's important to note that if waxing is done too frequently, it can lead to a buildup of wax residue and dust between layers, which can actually damage the floor.
This mother-and-baby grade flooring uses environmentally friendly water-based primer, which is both highly eco-friendly and has excellent adhesion, ensuring it's green and won't peel. It penetrates every grain, showcasing the wood's softness, delicacy, and resilience to the fullest, restoring the natural elegance of the wood.
