Southern pine prices rebound sharply

Overview

Overall sales in the North American market are slow. In many markets, limited demand is concentrated at higher price levels.

Declining sales to China have prompted some exporters to shift more production to the domestic market. Meanwhile, increasing import inventories from overseas suppliers, long-standing competitors for market share, continue to weigh on prices. Traders are closely monitoring the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations and the US-China trade war, noting any developments that could alter market direction.

Spruce-Pine-Hemlock (SPF)

Buyers' lack of urgency and widespread uncertainty surrounding recent products have hampered transactions. Prices have reportedly shifted slightly in both directions. Wholesalers are offering manufacturers double-digit discounts to offload inventory, but with little success. Large volumes of goods imported from Europe are vying for market share.

The WSPF 2X4 Grade 2 & BTRKD S4S (RL) has dropped from $484 to $482. Compared to other species, its price has only decreased slightly from $486 last month.

The price of WSPF 2X6 Level 2 & BTRKD S4S (RL) remains unchanged at $388, up $4 from $384 last month.

In contrast, the ESPF 2X4 Level 2 & BTRKD S4S (RL) saw a significant drop, falling from $575 to $565, $5 lower than the previous month's $570.

Southern Pine

Compared to other species, the price of Southern Pine is one of the species that has increased significantly.

The situation regarding Southern Pine is also affected by tariffs stemming from the US-China trade dispute, directly impacting the Chinese market, which would otherwise have been able to access Southern Pine logs and sawn timber. If negotiations fail in October, the beginning of October will wipe out all softwood timber trade between the two countries.

The Eastern Southern Pine 2X4 Grade 2 & BTR KD S4S rose $13 to $461 from $448, up $33 from $428 last month.

Southern Pine 2x6 Grade 2 & BTR KD S4S won the species' price increase game this week, rising from $357 last week to $392. Southern Pine 2x6 has experienced some dramatic price fluctuations this month, so this week's price is only $1 higher than last month's $391.

Douglas fir

Most buyers are taking a wait-and-see approach. Demand for low-end products is weak, and prices are flat or slightly lower.

Douglas fir 2X4 #2 & BTR S-GRN S4S fell from $445 to $440, unchanged from last month.

The price of Douglas fir 2X10 #2 & BTR S-GRN S4S remains unchanged at $450, up $10 from $440 last month.
