New type of solid wood veneer board – a combination of longitudinal and transverse lamination technology and formaldehyde-free adhesive!

Plywood is the leading product among my country's wood-based panels, and it is also the earliest-developed, fastest-growing, and most internationally competitive wood-based panel product in my country.

Plywood has many excellent properties, such as low density, high specific strength, and relatively easy processing, and is widely used in the furniture and decoration industry.

Stability and environmental friendliness are the constant pursuits of engineered wood products.

In a broad sense, plywood is a sandwich-like structure consisting of a face panel, a core panel, and a back panel, with 3 or 5 layers, etc.

The main difference between them lies in the style of the core board. If the core board is made of solid wood glued together, then it is the "blockboard" we are familiar with. Therefore, blockboard is plywood with a solid wood core.

Blockboard, with its superior performance, has been widely used in custom-made furniture made from solid wood or panels in recent years. With continuous advancements in production technology and market demand, stable performance and enhanced environmental friendliness will be the future direction for the continuous improvement of plywood types like blockboard.

How can we achieve both stability and environmental friendliness? In terms of the production process of plywood, the key lies in its structural design and the selection of adhesives.

Therefore, whether the structural design is reasonable, whether the adhesive is environmentally friendly and formaldehyde-free, and whether the pressing process is scientific are all key factors in determining the quality of plywood products.

So, from the perspective of current technology, is there a type of plywood product that meets the requirements of high strength, environmental protection, and a wide range of applications (can be veneered or painted)?

I learned about a new type of board called "Vertical and Horizontal Stacked Formaldehyde-Free Solid Wood Keding Board," which may give us more ideas about "high-performance environmentally friendly solid wood engineered boards."

Cross-lamination is a key method for stable performance.

The key to the stable performance and high strength of this solid wood veneer lies in its "longitudinal and transverse lamination" process. For ease of description and accuracy, and to facilitate better understanding, its components will first be labeled and named:

▲Real photo of a five-layer solid wood panel structure

▲Schematic diagram of the five-layer structure of solid wood composite board

As can be seen from the actual photos and illustrations, the solid wood veneer has five layers: two front and back panels, two inner lining panels, and a core panel in the middle.

Furthermore, the back panel and inner lining are placed symmetrically, sandwiching the core panel in the middle. This "odd-layer centrally symmetrical arrangement" helps improve the stability of the panels. But the real secret to its strength lies in the "vertical and horizontal stacking" of the five-layer structure.

The core board is mainly made of small-sized solid wood squares glued together. Its manufacturing process can be referenced as follows:

▲Simplified illustration of the back panel and inner lining panel

After the five-layer structure board is manufactured, it adopts the "longitudinal and transverse stacking" assembly method, in which the surface and back layers and the inner lining layer are glued in the same direction and then glued longitudinally to the core board.

MDI adhesive is the core guarantee for environmental protection and formaldehyde-free production.

The main production processes of artificial decorative panels, including substrate pressing and lamination, all require the use of adhesives, and the use of conventional adhesives inevitably releases formaldehyde.

Therefore, people have been working on the research of low-formaldehyde or formaldehyde-free adhesives, and the MDI adhesive used in solid wood veneer boards is an adhesive that does not release formaldehyde.

MDI stands for isocyanate adhesive, a dark reddish-brown liquid product suitable for manufacturing high-performance engineered wood panels. It possesses excellent safety and stability, and can even be used in the manufacture of artificial organs such as blood vessels and heart valves.

MDI-made environmentally friendly boards not only have zero formaldehyde release from the substrate, but also have near-zero release of benzene and TVOC, posing zero harm to human health.

Furthermore, Wanhua's MDI technology is a nationally protected patent, its importance comparable to that of aerospace and nuclear technology. Currently, only seven companies in four countries worldwide can produce MDI, with Wanhua being the only one in my country capable of doing so. For this reason, this technology won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2007.

Application of cross-laminated formaldehyde-free solid wood veneer

Solid wood phenolic resin board achieves a perfect combination of stable performance and formaldehyde-free environmental protection through its cross-laminated structure and the use of MDI adhesive. As a new type of solid wood engineered wood, solid wood phenolic resin board has a wide range of applications.

We know that veneer lamination is an important process for diversifying and enriching the styles and uses of engineered wood panels. Solid wood veneer, with its five-layer laminated structure, boasts a high degree of surface flatness and, after sanding, is suitable for surface decoration of various forms and materials.

Wood veneer

Wood veneer panels are made by processing precious wood species into thin wood slices with a thickness of 0.1-1mm, and then attaching the thin wood slices to a substrate.

Its characteristics include beautiful patterns, strong three-dimensionality, and rich colors. It is mainly used for the surface finishing of wooden doors, wooden wainscoting, and furniture.

For wood veneer panels, edge banding is crucial and affects the overall aesthetics. It is understood that the manufacturer of this solid wood veneer panel can provide seamless edge banding, ensuring perfect visual consistency for the panels.

melamine decorative paper veneer

Melamine board veneer is made by placing decorative papers of different colors and textures into melamine resin adhesive, and then laying them on the board after they have dried to a certain degree of curing. It has the characteristics of fire resistance, wear resistance, water resistance, high hardness, good heat resistance, and easy cleaning.

Solid wood veneer with melamine finish can be quickly applied to various scenarios, suitable for any needs of whole-house customization for panel components.

PP film lamination

PP film is a type of decorative film for paint-free furniture surfaces made from polypropylene (PP).

Solid wood veneer is covered with PP film, which has excellent sealing properties, impact resistance, and high temperature resistance.

Conclusion

As a new type of solid wood board, solid wood KOD board has achieved breakthroughs in structural stability and environmental protection. The combination of five layers of longitudinal and transverse lamination and formaldehyde-free MDI adhesive is undoubtedly the core guarantee of its quality and performance. Whether it's wood veneer finishes and seamless edge banding, or melamine and PP film finishes, solid wood KOD board can handle them all with ease.

With its diverse styles, paint-free and coating-free construction, stability, and environmental friendliness, this is exactly the kind of product that furniture design and production needs.
