What are UV- coated wood veneer panels?
In 2002, a company was established in Taiwan. Because of its superior wood coating technology compared to its competitors, it adopted "Keding," a homophone of "coating," as its brand name.
Keding Company pioneered UV-coated wood veneer panels, challenging traditional decoration techniques with a new approach of "post-production, on-site rapid installation." In 2008, the UV-coated wood veneer panels obtained the relevant management verification qualifications and began to be sold nationwide.
UV-coated wood veneer boards, as the name suggests, are made by covering a substrate with wood veneer and then coating the surface with UV paint.
Compared to simple wood veneer panels, wood veneer coated panels have a bright and glossy paint finish that also protects the wood veneer. Compared to plain coated panels, wood veneer coated panels retain the natural and beautiful grain of the wood veneer, reflecting a return to simplicity and natural charm.
UV-coated wood veneer panels are popular with consumers due to their convenient and quick decoration method, and have also opened up new ideas for panel production, leading many manufacturers to start producing these panels. Most of the followers have first imitated and then innovated based on the original Keding Company, and now they have achieved a relatively mature production scale, with product quality gradually improving.
Features of wood veneer coated boards
Convenience and environmental friendliness are the advantages of wood veneer coated boards, which is also the original intention of coated board design. However, on-site cutting and decoration also brings some problems, such as the on-site edge banding effect being not as good as factory machine edge banding.
01. Zero pollution on site
In my memory, traditional renovation methods always resulted in a chaotic construction site: pieces of wood of varying lengths scattered on the floor, sawdust blown by the wind in the corners, paint splattered everywhere, and the room filled with the pungent smell of paint...
Using pre-coated wood veneer eliminates the need for on-site painting, avoiding dust and air pollution from spraying and sanding. Furthermore, pre-coated wood veneer uses UV (ultraviolet curing) coatings, which offer high hardness and excellent transparency. Most importantly, UV coatings are among the most environmentally friendly paint types available, preventing the release of toxic gases and creating a safer home environment.
02. Short decoration period
The coated wood veneer adopts the form of "post-production and on-site quick installation". On-site, the boards only need to be cut into appropriate sizes and can be directly applied to the wall for decoration. This simplifies the process, reduces the difficulty of construction, and shortens the decoration period.
For commercial spaces like hotels, time is money. This fast-paced renovation method saves on upfront costs, indirectly generating extra revenue. Similarly, for homeowners, we understand their eagerness to see and even move into their new homes. Therefore, shortening the renovation period is extremely attractive to customers.
03. Edge sealing is a pain point
If there's anything unsatisfactory about wood veneer coated boards, it's definitely their edge banding process. Most wood veneer coated boards require on-site cutting and edge banding. The quality of manual edge banding depends to some extent on the experience of the installer and the quality of the on-site edge banding equipment. If not handled carefully, the edges will peel, fray, and become uneven, often not as perfect as factory machine edge banding.
Edge banding defects are a major pain point in the use of coated wood veneer, and manufacturers of coated wood veneer are constantly working to improve this defect with more refined processes.

01. High-quality substrate, machine splicing
High-quality wood veneer coated boards all use eucalyptus plywood as the base material, strictly controlling the quality of raw materials to lay a solid foundation for the quality of the coated boards. Compared with eucalyptus or poplar-alum base materials, eucalyptus wood has a higher specific gravity and a lower water absorption and swelling rate, making it less prone to deformation during production and use.
Meanwhile, the coated panels are produced using a fully interlocking core production method, enabling mechanized production, precise control of panel quality, and elimination of quality defects caused by uneven manual panel assembly.
02. Improved edge banding, more options
To address the pain points of edge banding for coated panels, improving the edge banding process has always been the focus of the R&D team. The design team has designed edge banding materials of different specifications that can be adapted to both factory machine edge banding and on-site manual edge banding.

For factory edge banding, the wood veneer is cut into 2cm wide rolls, suitable for machine edge banding of standard 18mm thick boards. For manual edge banding, 600mm*2440mm wood veneer is selected and cut on-site as needed for flexible use.

03. Customized sampling, highly personalized
All wood veneer coatings are completed in the factory, ensuring that what customers see is what they get, thus avoiding disputes such as color differences and uneven coloring caused by later painting processes.
Furthermore, the factory can customize samples according to the customer's desired wood veneer type, texture, color, and other requirements, allowing the customer to intuitively experience the finished effect of the coated board and meet the customer's personalized needs.
04. Performance improvements and quality enhancements
Traditional spray paint has flammable properties; sparks can easily fuel the spread of fire, and it is difficult to extinguish, resulting in charring. In contrast, the paint on wood veneer panels is flame-retardant, does not readily support combustion, and will not char when exposed to heat sources.
Wood veneer coated boards have a protective paint finish, making them more resistant to acids and alkalis than ordinary wood veneer boards, and also more moisture-resistant. The surface hardness of these boards can reach 3H to 6H, and they are less prone to white fogging and scratches from impacts. Therefore, wood veneer coated boards are more robust and durable.
We all know that spray paint is prone to discoloration after being exposed to light for a long time, while coated panels are treated with high-grade paint and baking paint, which has better UV resistance and is less prone to fading.
