I. Technical Overview
This technology, developed by the Wood Chemistry Application Research Team of the Wood Industry Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Forestry with funding from the National Science and Technology Support Project and the National Key Research and Development Program, is a novel formaldehyde-free soybean protein adhesive for engineered wood products. It uses defatted soybean meal powder as raw material. This adhesive is environmentally friendly, has good water resistance, high bonding strength, and contains no formaldehyde or benzene compounds or other toxic and harmful substances. The adhesive production process releases no harmful gases, completely solving the problem of formaldehyde and other volatile organic compound pollution from engineered wood products.
II. Technical Features
- The soybean meal protein directional grafting technology improves the pre-compression and sizing performance of soybean gum.
- Synergistic crosslinking enhancement technology solves the technical problems of high viscosity, low bonding strength and poor water resistance of traditional soybean gum.
- The green modification technology of soybean meal protein enables the production and use of adhesives without the release of harmful gases.
III. Economic and Technical Indicators
-
Solid content 38%–42%, viscosity 6,000–8,000 mPa·s, shelf life over 30 days;
-
The water-resistant adhesive strength meets the Class II water-resistant adhesive strength standard in the national standard (test result is 1.0 MPa).
-
Formaldehyde emission is 0.02–0.08 mg/L;
-
The total volatile organic compound (TVOC) release rate was 0.02 mg/(m2·h);
-
Plywood will not come apart when boiled in boiling water for more than 4 hours.
IV. Product Competitiveness and Market Prospects
This technology is an important pathway for the transformation and upgrading of wood-based panels to "formaldehyde-free" products, aligning with the national sustainable development direction. This adhesive is easy to use, requiring only room temperature mixing. It is easy to apply and can replace conventional formaldehyde-containing adhesives for wood-based panels. Manufacturers can adjust the viscosity of the protein adhesive according to the characteristics and processes of their wood-based panel products. It is suitable for the production of wood-based panel products such as plywood, blockboard, and engineered wood flooring substrates, as well as for veneer applications on particleboard, fiberboard, plywood, and blockboard. It has already been demonstrated and applied by numerous wood-based panel companies and has broad market application prospects.
