Many people focus on appearance when they renovate their new house for the first time, thus ignoring the functionality of the space.
My house is like this. When I renovated my first house, I made a marble TV background wall, bought branded sofas and high-end beds. I became aesthetically fatigued after moving in for less than half a year, and began to regret not putting comfort and practicality first.
For example, the bedroom was really "good-looking" when I renovated it for the first time. The 15㎡ master bedroom spent nearly 40,000 yuan on soft and hard decoration, but it was not easy to sleep in.
So when I renovated my new house for the second time, in order to make the bedroom more "easy to sleep", I adhered to the following 5 principles. After moving in, I couldn't help but praise myself for being wise, too comfortable and practical.
Principle 1: Lighting design should be reasonable
When I renovated the house for the first time, I chose a popular chandelier for the main bedroom lamp for the sake of beauty. I installed a hanging lamp on each side of the bed. It looks good, but it is not practical.
The main lamp is not only difficult to clean, but also has a sense of oppression above the bed; the hanging lamp at the head of the bed will be bumped at any time, and it is easy to be damaged.
So for the second renovation, I chose a minimalist bold lamp as the main lamp, and matched it with invisible light strips at the head of the bed and the curtain box. The effect of no main lamp was achieved without a full ceiling. The main point is to create a sense of luxury with a low budget.
Principle 2: Reasonable storage area
I didn’t think too much when I renovated the house for the first time. In addition, the bedroom was not big, so I just made a set of wardrobes on the side of the bed. However, after moving in, I found that there was no place to put the coats, sweaters, and other second-hand clean clothes that were only worn for one day but did not need to be washed, so they could only be piled on the stool. There was no place to put many small clothes and daily books.
So when I renovated the house for the second time, I paid special attention to the storage design. In addition to the regular wardrobe, I also designed the following three storage areas:
① Secondary clean clothes area
So-called secondary clean clothes are clothes that have been worn but do not need to be washed. There are more of them in winter. Such clothes are not suitable for being placed in the wardrobe, as they will contaminate clean clothes. Therefore, I deliberately reserved a part of the open cabinet in the whole row of wardrobes at the end of the bed as a secondary clean clothes area.
The coats, jeans, scarves and gloves that you usually wear can be taken off and hung here after entering the bedroom, which is completely separated from the clean clothes, which is clean and convenient.
② Jewelry storage area
Girls always have some jewelry. Small ones such as earrings can be placed on the dressing table, but if there is more jewelry, plus some scarves, bow ties, belts, and other decorations, then a separate storage area is needed. Putting all of them on the dressing table will look very messy and inconvenient to take.
So when I renovated the house for the second time, I designed two drawers with contrasting colors under the secondary clean clothes area as a jewelry storage area. When I go home, I change my home clothes and take off my jewelry in the secondary clean clothes area. The process is very smooth.
Principle 3: The air conditioner cannot face the head of the bed
When I renovated the house for the first time, I didn’t know anything. The bedroom air conditioner was a wall-mounted unit installed on the wall at the end of the bed. The wind blowing out was just facing the head of the bed. It is easy to catch a cold and have a headache after blowing cold wind all night in summer.
So in order to avoid this problem, I chose a duct machine in the bedroom for the second renovation. It is more cost-effective than the central air conditioner. The air outlet can be designed above the door, that is, on the side of the bed. The wind blowing out is also facing the end of the bed, and will not blow directly on the body, which will be more comfortable.
Principle 4: The mattress is worth investing in more than the bed
When I renovated the house for the first time, I bought a high-end bed for a good look, which cost 15,000 yuan, but spent 2,000 yuan to buy an ordinary mattress online. After moving in, I found that no matter how good the bed looks, it is not as good as having a comfortable mattress.
So for the second renovation, I decided to buy only a regular style solid wood bed, as long as it is environmentally friendly and matches the style of the room. However, I spent more than 10,000 yuan to buy a custom mattress. I no longer have back pain after waking up, and even if my family members turn over, it will not affect me. This time, I spent the money wisely.
Principle 5: Warm tones should not be cold
When I first renovated the house, I chose the popular black, white and gray at the time. The overall tone of the bedroom was cold, not warm at all, without "popularity", and looked very depressing.
So for the second renovation, I insisted on choosing warm tones:
① Choose wooden floor
In order to make it easier to maintain, the floor was paved with marble tiles. It was high-end, but not warm; the second time, I directly chose the original wood color wooden floor, which is beautiful and warm to the touch, and it is easy to create a warm atmosphere.
② Warm-tone latex paint on the wall
When I first renovated the bedroom, the wall was painted with high-grade gray wall paint. After a long time, I didn’t think it was high-end, but just felt a "cold style"; the second time, I directly chose milk tea color wall paint, which was warm and gentle at first glance.
Written at the end:
For us young people, we are busy working during the day and only the night belongs to ourselves, so the bedroom decoration must be more important for "sleeping well" than "looking good".
