Formaldehyde, designated a Class 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, can cause cancers such as nasopharyngeal cancer if inhaled over a long period of time. Excessive indoor formaldehyde levels are common in China. CCTV News reported that spot checks of air quality in newly built homes in my country revealed an average formaldehyde level exceeding standards of 70% to 80%. Effective May 1, 2018, China's national standard GB18580-2017, "Limits of Formaldehyde Emissions from Indoor Decorative and Refinishing Materials, Wood-Based Panels, and Their Products," came into effect. This mandatory standard, prefixed with "GB," differs from the recommended standards prefixed with "GB/T." Its most significant change is the elimination of classifications and the introduction of a single formaldehyde limit. The new standard has only one grade, E1. E1-grade panels contain less than or equal to 0.124 mg of formaldehyde per cubic meter.
