Wooden furniture materials include various solid wood, solid wood splicing or veneer, and various raw materials and finished products of artificial boards used to make furniture. The raw materials of boards suitable for furniture have various specifications such as 15/19/21/25/32/38/45/50/55 mm.
Wooden furniture is divided into solid wood furniture and board-wood composite furniture
solid wood furniture
Mahogany furniture: Mahogany is also a solid wood, but because of the particularity of its material selection and craftsmanship, it is a category of its own in the industry.
Cork solid wood furniture: Common species include Canadian hemlock, European spruce, Canadian red cedar, Russian Scotch pine, etc.
Advantages: cheap, natural and environmentally friendly, not easy to deform, clear texture, good thermal conductivity;
Common wood species for hardwood furniture include cherry, oak, beech, elm, and birch. Elm and beech are commonly used by the public, leading to the saying "elm in the north and beech in the south." Hardwood also includes rubberwood, which is relatively lightweight but still quite hard. The main advantages and disadvantages of this type of furniture are as follows:
1. Rubberwood
Advantages: smooth, good adhesive paint performance, good toughness, not easy to crack, easy to maintain;
Disadvantages: The wood is relatively loose, contains a lot of sugar, has a sour smell that is difficult to remove, and is prone to insect infestation;
2. Birch
Advantages: easy to process, good viscose paint performance, straight texture;
Disadvantages: The fiber has poor shear resistance, is prone to burring, and is relatively wear-resistant; it is easy to absorb moisture and deform in humid places;
3. Elm
Advantages: Tough and elastic, can be carved with patterns similar to wenge;
Disadvantages: There is obvious color difference between heartwood and sapwood;
4. Beech
Advantages: Thick and strong, soft and shiny color, can be bent under steam;
Disadvantages: Poor drying control may cause cracking and deformation;
5. Manchurian ash
Advantages: The texture is clear and appears bright after varnishing. It is suitable for making modern minimalist style furniture and can also imitate precious wood species.
Disadvantages: It has large shrinkage and deformation, and color difference, so it is not suitable for making completely solid wood furniture;
6. Oak
Advantages: Distinctive mountain-shaped pattern, solid texture, good touch, suitable for European-style furniture;
Disadvantages: The workmanship requirements are relatively high, otherwise it is easy to deform and shrink;
7. Black Walnut
Advantages: deep and elegant color, paint stain lasts long, corrosion-resistant, not easy to deform;
Disadvantages: expensive, poor toughness;
Panel furniture
Panel furniture is made mainly of artificial boards (including plywood, blockboard, particleboard, MDF, etc.), with only a small number of parts made of solid wood, and the surface covered with various decorative materials.
Advantages: relatively stable performance, easy to handle furniture that needs to bend and deform; the panels are connected with metal hardware, which makes disassembly and transportation convenient; high degree of mechanization and fast production speed; easy to achieve design diversification and fashion, and relatively cheap.
Disadvantages: It is more likely to be environmentally unfriendly; its service life is shorter than that of well-made solid wood furniture; its overall sturdiness is lower than that of solid wood furniture.
