Wood has always played a very important role in the history of Chinese life. It is mild and natural in nature, highly plastic, and can be used as furniture, utensils, and home decoration materials. Flooring is one of the most commonly used wooden home decoration materials today.
Good solid wood flooring can be preserved for several years with proper maintenance, but the life of the floor is not infinite. Natural factors such as sunlight, air, and seasonal changes will affect the lifespan of solid wood flooring.
As winter arrives and the weather becomes increasingly dry, improperly cared for floors can lead to cracking and other problems. This floor care guide can help consumers properly maintain their floors in winter and extend their lifespan.
01. Maintain humidity
Winter is dry and humidity is relatively low. Wood fibers in wooden floors naturally shrink due to water loss. If the floor's moisture content is too low, it can cause cracking and gaping at joints. Residents can wipe the floor with a damp cloth two or three times a week or use a small humidifier to keep it moist.
The new five-layer engineered wood flooring upgrades from a traditional multi-layer base to a three-layer base, with a top and bottom stabilizing layer added. The symmetrical stabilizing layers form the main structure, supplemented by a natural wood decorative top layer and a moisture-resistant beech balancing bottom layer. The addition of two stabilizing layers at the top and bottom effectively controls the wood's internal stress through a vertical and horizontal interlocking mechanical structure, significantly reducing the chance of floor deformation. This effectively prevents cracking and deformation even in cold, dry winters.
02. Turning on and off the floor heating needs to be done gradually
With the recent colder weather, homes with underfloor heating have already started turning on their heaters. To prevent sudden changes in temperature from damaging the floor, it's important to increase the temperature slowly before turning on the floor heating for the first time. Increase the temperature by no more than 3°C per day to allow the wood flooring sufficient time to adapt and avoid excessively rapid heating, which can cause the floor to expand and warp. The same principle also applies when turning off the floor heating.
Solid wood floor heating floor has constant temperature modification technology, stable and resistant to ground heat, step-by-step temperature rise and fall makes the wood tend to balance, retaining the natural activity of the floor. When you step on the floor, you can feel the rich warmth emanating from the soles of your feet.
03. Reduce exposure to the sun
Winter sunshine is bright and warm, and people often open the curtains to enjoy the sunshine when they're home. However, it's important to avoid excessive exposure to the sun on floors. While winter sunlight isn't as intense as summer, prolonged exposure can still cause discoloration and surface aging of floors, and may even cause them to lose water, shrink, and separate. Therefore, when your home is unoccupied for extended periods, you should implement floor shielding measures, such as installing blackout curtains or using soft furnishings like carpet to protect the floor.
Each floor undergoes an extended 180-day curing process to release residual internal stress, strictly control moisture content, and enhance floor stability. Even in the face of intense sunlight, it is less likely to deform or warp.
04. Waxing and maintenance
Winter brings dry indoor air, and many people wax their floors more frequently to keep them moisturized and lustrous. Waxing insulates the floor from the air, reducing damage from oxidation and exposure to harmful airborne substances. However, it's important to note that waxing too frequently can cause wax deposits to accumulate, creating a layer of dust between coats and damaging the floor.
Our maternity and baby-grade flooring utilizes an environmentally friendly, water-based primer that is both eco-friendly and highly adhesive, making it both environmentally friendly and non-flaking.
