What you should know about the environmental protection grade and standards of boards!

2025-10-20

Nowadays, more and more people prefer panel furniture. Its moderate price, novel style, and resistance to deformation and cracking have won the recognition and love of consumers. While pursuing these, environmental protection is also an aspect that cannot be ignored.

In the building materials market, some board materials fail to meet environmental standards for formaldehyde emissions. Using these boards in furniture production can cause indoor pollutants to exceed standards. Many consumers are unfamiliar with national standards and feel confused.

Environmental protection grade and standard of board

Regarding the environmental protection level and standards of board materials, different companies have different opinions. Here, Ping An Tree has compiled a more comprehensive list of environmental protection levels and relevant standards for board materials for your reference when purchasing products.

1. The E-class is more common in the market

First, there's the more common E-grade, which is divided into three grades: E0, E1, and E2. Based on European environmental standards, these three grades categorize wood products based on their formaldehyde emissions. During the implementation period, E1-grade certified boards can be used for interior decoration.

E0 level (formaldehyde emission ≤ 0.5 mg/L)

E1 grade (formaldehyde emission 0.5mg-1.5mg/L)

E2 level (formaldehyde emission greater than 1.5 mg/L)

During the implementation of this standard, E0 was the highest environmental protection grade at the time, but with the infusion of science and technology, E0 grade boards can no longer meet the needs of modern people, because it only represents a smaller dose of formaldehyde released.

E1 grade is allowed to be used indoors. E2 grade has a strong odor and is not suitable for human habitation, especially for children, pregnant women and other people. Living in such a room for a long time can induce many diseases, such as leukemia.

2. F series star certification from Japan

Let's talk about Japan's F-series star certification. F-star certification is a series of Japanese JAS certifications for the wood products industry. It is divided into four levels. Compared with the European E-level certification, it is an improvement. Its core focus is still on formaldehyde emissions, but it is relatively higher than the E-level standard.

F★ (≤5.0mg/L) Formaldehyde emission is less than or equal to 5mg per L

F★★ (≤1.5mg/L) Formaldehyde emission per L is less than or equal to 1.5mg

F★★★ (≤0.5mg/L) Formaldehyde emission is less than or equal to 0.5mg per L

F★★★★ (≤0.3mg/L) Formaldehyde emission is less than or equal to 0.3mg per L

3. CARB grade certification from the United States

The US CARB certification began in 2008 and was initially implemented only in California. It has now been extended to the United States. This standard is the world's most stringent standard for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products. The California Air Resources Board (hereinafter referred to as CARB) divides wood composite products into three levels: P1, P2, and the highest level NAF, which is also called formaldehyde-free exemption certification.

CARB is a regulation in the United States that controls formaldehyde emissions from wood panels. Currently, this regulation is one of the strictest standards for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products.

From the E-level environmental protection standard to the F-series star standard and then to the CARB standard, each upgrade of the environmental protection level reflects people's attention to health and respect for life. However, it should be noted that meeting the standard of the panel does not mean that the indoor air quality meets the standard. There is a problem of panel loading rate, just like one person smoking in the room is different from ten or a hundred people smoking.

After understanding the environmental protection level and standards of board materials, do you have a clear idea of what to do? As an indispensable decoration material in home decoration, board materials must be selected with great care.
