In winter, the ambient temperature is low, and the edge banding process in furniture making is often affected by the temperature and may cause some problems. Below, we have compiled some precautions for edge banding furniture in winter, hoping to help all woodworking friends.
Problem 1: The melting time is long or the glue is too thick
1. Check the glue tank for carbides that prevent or prolong heat transfer. If any, remove them.
2. Check whether the heating tubes are working properly.
3. Increase the temperature by 10℃-20℃.
4. Change to a product with a slightly lower viscosity and softening point.
Problem 2: Glue opening time is too short
1. Increase the operating temperature (10℃-20℃)
2. Improve the working speed of the machine.
3. Increase the amount of glue applied.
4. Mix in or replace products that have been open for a long time.
5. Heat the edge banding or board (usually with a heat lamp or hot air blower) to artificially increase the ambient temperature, generally above 15°C.
Question 3: The edge is easy to tear after sealing and the edge is not glued
1. Check whether the edge sealing primer is qualified.
2. Check whether the adhesive layer is flattened after tearing. If it is flattened, increase the temperature appropriately or mix in products with strong permeability and cold resistance. If there are clear marks of the adhesive coating wheel, increase the amount of adhesive and the pressure.
3. Replace products with ones with stronger cold resistance.
Problem 4: Not enough glue to seal thickened plates (over 28mm)
1. Increase the operating temperature.
2. Reduce the working speed of the edge banding machine.
3. Mix in or replace products with lower viscosity and softening point.
Problem 5: Edge banding and grooving are prone to edge collapse and debonding
1. Edge collapse is mostly caused by the edge being too brittle. Replace the edge with one that is still strong and tough under low temperature conditions.
2. Use hot melt adhesive with strong penetration, strong adhesion and good toughness.
3. Seal the edges and start grooving immediately.
4. Heat the surface appropriately and start grooving after the surface temperature of the edge banding reaches 20℃-40℃.
5. Use products with good cold resistance.
Problem 6: The edge sealing of thin plates (less than 9mm) is not firm
1. Increase the operating temperature
2. Increase the working speed of the edge banding machine.
3. Increase the amount of glue applied.
4. Replace the hot melt adhesive with a long open time (reason: boards below 9mm are thin, the amount of glue applied is small, the heat dissipation is fast, and the open time of the glue is shortened. The principle is the same as half a cup of boiling water cools faster than a cup of boiling water).
Question 7: When manually sealing the edge, the board does not stick to the glue and cannot be sealed firmly
1. The board is too loose and can only seal the sawdust on the surface of the board, which is easy to tear.
2. The board is too hard and the glue cannot penetrate into the board.
3. The operating temperature is not high enough.
4. The pressure is not great enough.
5. The penetration of the glue is not strong enough.
6. It is recommended to use transparent tape.
To sum up, if you encounter edge banding falling off or unsatisfactory bonding effects in winter, please follow the steps below. I hope it will be of some help to you.
1. Measure the temperature of the coating wheel (above 180°C).
2. Check whether there is sediment at the bottom of the glue tank (normal heating).
3. Check whether the heating tube is working properly (heating normally).
4. Increase the temperature by 10℃-20℃.
5. Increase the amount of glue applied.
6. Increase the pressure.
7. Increase the working speed of the edge banding machine.
8. Check whether the edge coating is qualified and replace the edge strips with different product colors or batches for testing.
9. Mix in or replace products with low softening point and viscosity.
10. Mix or replace products with better cold resistance. Increasing production speed while reducing the amount of glue applied will result in insufficient hot melt adhesive strength.
