Not necessarily, because in addition to glue, board edge sealing is also a key factor affecting the environmental friendliness of the board.
High-quality edge banding can effectively prevent the release of harmful substances from the board. If the edge banding workmanship is poor and the quality is not up to standard, even if the board itself is environmentally friendly, it will affect the indoor air quality. Therefore, when decorating, do not ignore the board edge banding.
Why edge banding?
Generally speaking, the formaldehyde in the board mainly comes from the glue. But even if you choose a board made with environmentally friendly glue, if the edge sealing is not done well, formaldehyde will still be released.
During the cutting and processing of the board, the internal fiber structure is destroyed, making it easier for formaldehyde to escape from these cross-sections.
Edge banding is like a protective suit for the panels, effectively controlling formaldehyde release. However, if the edge banding process is poor, the edge banding strips and panels don't fit tightly together, or the edge banding material is of poor quality, this protective suit will be ineffective.
In addition, edge banding is also for the overall beauty.
Edge banding type
The common edge banding technologies currently on the market include EVA edge banding, PUR edge banding and laser edge banding.
1. EVA edge banding
EVA edge banding is cheap and easy to make, so many small factories use it.
However, it has obvious glue lines and is prone to cracking when exposed to high temperatures. It is not suitable for use in places with large temperature changes and high humidity, such as kitchens.
This edge banding technology is generally not recommended.
2. PUR edge banding
PUR edge banding uses moisture-curing reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesive, which is sensitive to moisture and will undergo a chemical reaction and solidify after contact with moisture in the air.
The glue line of PUR edge banding is thinner than that of EVA edge banding, and it has better water resistance and heat resistance, and its service life is relatively longer.
PUR edge banding uses reactive glue, in which the isocyanate groups will undergo chemical cross-linking reactions with water molecules in the environment or the substrate to form moisture curing, and this process is irreversible.
This makes the PUR edge banding extremely moisture-resistant, so there is no need to worry about moisture problems; it uses environmentally friendly glue and the amount of glue applied is small; it is also very stable and will not crack due to temperature changes.
Therefore, when choosing board edge banding, it is recommended to choose PUR edge banding first!
3. Laser edge banding
Laser edge banding uses laser to fuse special edge banding strips with the edge of the board to form a seamless edge banding effect.
Laser edge sealing is indeed beautiful, durable and waterproof, but it is expensive. If you have sufficient budget, you can choose laser edge sealing.
