Cabinets include wardrobes, cupboards, bathroom cabinets, TV cabinets, etc. So, let's first understand what kinds of boards are there.
Classification of boards
For the common boards, there are several types of board classification:
Solid wood board, core board, bamboo plywood, density board, veneer, fine core board, melamine board, waterproof board, gypsum board, cement board, paint board, particle board, etc.
So what are the differences between these boards? Based on my more than 10 years of experience in the home furnishing industry, I have summarized the characteristics of these boards.
Characteristics of different boards
1. Solid wood board
Solid wood boards are durable, with natural grain, and most have the characteristic aroma of natural wood. They also have good moisture absorption and breathability, which are beneficial to human health and environmentally friendly, making them a high-quality choice for high-end furniture and home decoration. Certain special wood materials (such as beech) are also ideal for manufacturing gun stocks and precision instruments. Their most prominent characteristic is their environmental friendliness, though this is of course relative.
2. Core board
Also known as blockboard, wood core board, or woodworking board, it is made from two veneer sheets glued together and is a type of plywood. Because blockboard is a special type of plywood, the production process must adhere to the principle of symmetry to prevent warping. As a thick board, blockboard has the attractive appearance and similar strength of ordinary thick plywood, but is lighter than thick plywood, consumes less glue, and requires less investment. It also gives the impression of solid wood, satisfying consumers' desire for solid wood furniture.
3. Bamboo panels
Made of layered bamboo strips and pieces glued together under pressure, it has convex and concave tongue and grooves all around and anti-slip grooves on the bottom.
4. Density board
Density fiberboard (DMF) is made from wood or other plant fibers, processed through fiber preparation, application of synthetic resin, and compression under heat and pressure. This board offers a smooth surface, fine texture, stable performance, strong edges, and decorative properties. However, its moisture resistance is relatively poor, and its nail holding capacity is above average. However, if screws become loose after tightening, they can be difficult to secure in the same position.
5. Decorative panels
Decorative veneer plywood, also known as decorative veneer plywood, is a surface material used for interior decoration or furniture manufacturing. Natural or engineered wood is sliced into thin sheets of a certain thickness, adhered to the plywood surface, and then hot-pressed. The material classification of this board is quite complex, including stone, porcelain, metal, wood, and other materials. Different materials have different characteristics, the most typical of which are its strong decorative properties and direct application. It can be used directly without extensive processing and is also very beautiful.
6. Melamine board
The industry prefers to call it ecological board. Its base materials are mainly particle board and medium-density fiberboard. Its characteristics are high hardness, wear resistance and good heat resistance.
7. Thin core board
Made from three or more layers of one-millimeter-thick veneer or sheet, glued together and hot-pressed. It's the most common material used in handmade furniture. It's strong and has good bending resistance, making it a type of plywood.
8. Particleboard
Particleboard is a man-made board formed by applying an adhesive and then gluing it together under heat and pressure. Its uniform structure allows for excellent processing, allowing it to be processed into large-format panels as needed. However, its high density also makes furniture made from particleboard generally heavier. The solid wood particleboard currently used in furniture is also a type of particleboard.
Through the above introduction, you should have a specific understanding of various boards, so you can choose the appropriate board according to what cabinet you want to make. . . .
