Good furniture is inseparable from good board materials. Board materials are the basic materials and play a decisive role in the finished furniture. Many people have their own ideas about the home decoration style and color matching they want, but when it comes to the specific board materials to choose, they are a little confused.
Today, Zhoubao will introduce to you the six common types of boards so that you can understand their characteristics in more detail.
1. Solid wood board
Solid wood boards are wood panels made from intact logs. They are generally categorized by the wood's substance (the raw material), with no standardized specifications. Solid wood boards are used in contrast to a wide range of non-solid wood products, such as plywood and pressed board panels made from wood processing waste, crop straw, rice husks, peanut shells, and other materials. Solid wood boards are durable, have a natural grain, and often possess the characteristic aroma of natural wood. They also have good moisture absorption and breathability, are beneficial to human health, and are environmentally friendly, making them a high-quality choice for high-end furniture and home renovations.
2. Multilayer board
Multilayer boards, also known as plywood, are made by peeling wood segments into veneers or planing wood blocks into veneers, then gluing them together with adhesive. Typically, an odd number of layers are used, with adjacent layers glued together with their fibers perpendicular to each other. Due to their rational structure and meticulous processing, these boards are resistant to deformation and have a high strength coefficient.
3. Ecological board
Ecological board, also known as paint-free board, is a decorative board made by soaking paper with different colors or textures in melamine resin adhesive, then drying it to a certain degree of solidification, and laying it on particleboard, moisture-proof board, medium-density fiberboard, plywood, blockboard or other solid wood boards, and then hot pressing it. Therefore, it is often called melamine board.
4. Solid wood sliced OSB board
Solid wood sliced OSB (Oriented Strand Board), scientifically known as oriented strand board, is a new type of board originating from Europe and rapidly developing internationally in the 1970s and 1980s. Its application in furniture has seen unprecedented growth, with many large furniture companies beginning to use OSB. It is highly sought after by consumers because it emits no formaldehyde, is sturdy and durable, and is lighter than furniture made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF). It also offers better moisture resistance and screw-holding properties.
5. Density board
Density board (MDF) is made from wood or other plant fibers, processed through fiber preparation, applied with synthetic resin, and pressed under heat and pressure. MDF is easily coated, allowing for even application of various coatings and paints, making it a preferred substrate for paint effects. MDF is also an attractive decorative board, suitable for gluing various materials such as veneer, adhesive film, veneer, light metal sheet, and melamine board. Hard MDF can also be punched and drilled to create sound-absorbing panels for architectural decoration. It offers excellent physical properties, a uniform texture, and is immune to dehydration.
6. Blockboard
A man-made board made from strips of logs joined together to form a core, then coated with natural, peeled veneer. The outermost veneer layer of a blockboard is called the faceboard, the inner veneer is called the middleboard, and the core is called the coreboard. The small strips that make up the coreboard are called core strips, with the grain of the core strips oriented longitudinally along the board. Coreboard is made from high-quality natural wood panels that have been heat-treated (i.e., dried in a kiln) and processed into strips of a specific specification. These strips are then spliced together using a splicing machine. The spliced boards are then covered on both sides with a layer of high-quality middleboard and faceboard, and then glued together using hot and cold presses.
