Environmental protection grade standards and purchasing tips for boards

2025-09-20

When decorating, people often talk about "aldehyde" in fear. As an important part of home decoration, board materials are also one of the main sources of formaldehyde in the decoration process.

Although formaldehyde is harmful, it is a threshold hazard and its harm will only appear when the concentration exceeds a certain level.

my country's latest indoor air quality standard stipulates that the 1-hour average formaldehyde value should be less than or equal to 0.080 mg/m³.

There are many environmental protection standards and grades for boards on the market, which dazzles consumers, such as E1, E0, F4, NAF, ENF, etc. If you want to buy safe and environmentally friendly boards that suit you, you must first understand the environmental protection level of the boards.

Popular Science of Plate Knowledge

There are currently four major mainstream environmental protection standard grades for panels:

European standard E-level, new national standard E-level, Japanese F-star, and US CARB level certification.

  • European standard E grade is currently the most popular and well-implemented quality technical standard in the world. The formaldehyde emission content standards it stipulates are as follows:

E1≤0.5mg/L

E2≤1.5mg/L

  • The new national standard E-grade is divided into three levels: E1, E0, and Enf. The formaldehyde emission content standards are as follows: E1 ≤ 0.124 mg/m³

E0 level≤0.050mg/m³

ENF level≤0.025mg/m³

The new national standard E1 level is my country's mandatory national standard and the entry standard for environmentally friendly panels; the ENF level is the highest environmental protection standard of the current new national standard.

  • Japan's F-star standard is divided into 4 levels, and the formaldehyde emission content standards are as follows:

F☆ (≤5mg/L)

F☆☆ (≤1.5mg/L)

F☆☆☆ (≤0.5mg/L)

F☆☆☆☆ (≤0.3mg/L)

The higher the F star rating, the lower the formaldehyde emission. F☆☆☆☆ is the highest level in Japan's environmental protection standards.

  • The US CARB certification is divided into three levels:

    P1, P2, NAF levels.

The highest grade is NAF, also known as formaldehyde-free exemption certification. The formaldehyde emission standard of NAF grade is 0.04ppm.

The four environmental standards use different testing methods and conditions, so comparisons cannot be made based solely on the data. However, research indicates that the Japanese F☆☆☆☆ formaldehyde emission limit of 0.3 mg/L is approximately equivalent to the European standard climate chamber test value of 0.04 mg/m³.

Of the four environmental protection grade standards, the new national standard E-grade is the most widely used in the Chinese market and was officially implemented on October 1, 2021. The new national standard E-grade adopts the "national standard 1 cubic meter climate chamber method" which is highly similar to the "European standard climate chamber method EN 717-1" of the European standard E-grade, and also has very strict requirements on formaldehyde emission limits.

Domestic panels that meet the new national standard E1 are qualified environmentally friendly products and are allowed to be used for interior decoration. E0 and ENF grade panels meet the more stringent formaldehyde emission standards and can well meet the requirements of indoor air quality standards.

Tips for purchasing boards

1. It is best to purchase panels through formal channels and choose panels produced by big brands. This is because big brand companies generally have more mature production and processing technology, more advanced equipment, more stringent quality inspection systems and better after-sales guarantees;

2. When purchasing environmentally friendly panels, pay attention to the environmental grade mark of the panels. It is best to see the merchant's test report. You can ask the dealer for the panel's quality inspection report for review;

3. The space we live in is fixed, and the accumulation of formaldehyde levels can cause environmental pollution. When purchasing building materials, it is important to choose more environmentally friendly materials and pay attention to the amount of building materials used. 4. In addition to environmental protection, the color of the board is also a key research and development direction for board manufacturers. There are currently a wide variety of board colors available on the market, and you can choose a board color based on your home's decoration style and your personal preferences.
