Winter heating triggers the volatilization of decoration pollutants. Do the boards in your home meet the standards?

2025-10-19

November brings a sharp drop in temperatures, bringing a chill. Many cities across China have entered the winter heating season. Be aware: poor indoor ventilation in winter releases large amounts of formaldehyde hidden in paint, flooring, and furniture, making it over 10 times more toxic than normal.

Many households have misconceptions about formaldehyde, believing that formaldehyde is not released in winter due to the low temperatures. However, the winter indoor heating season is when formaldehyde, benzene, and other decoration pollutants are most likely to evaporate. The formaldehyde exceedance rate in winter has reached as high as 73%.

The increase in formaldehyde concentration in winter is mainly related to the following three factors:

1. Indoor temperature

Since formaldehyde's boiling point is 19°C, when the temperature exceeds 19°C, the formaldehyde volatilization rate increases by 0.4 times for every 1°C increase in indoor temperature. This is especially true during summer heatwaves or winter heating, when formaldehyde release is more intense, with concentrations reaching four times the usual level. When heating is applied, indoor temperatures generally reach above 20°C, at which point formaldehyde hidden in paint, flooring, and furniture is released in large quantities.

2. Indoor air circulation

After entering the winter heating season, most people are reluctant to open windows for ventilation frequently. The indoor airtightness and poor ventilation lead to no indoor air convection and a large amount of formaldehyde accumulation indoors. In addition, people have a slow sense of smell for harmful gases in winter, so they are more seriously harmed by formaldehyde.

3. Environmental friendliness of interior materials

Board materials are the largest decorative material in home interior decoration. They are also the most frequently used, occupy a higher proportion of decoration funds and have the greatest impact on the indoor environment. The volatilization period of formaldehyde is as long as 3-15 years. If the materials are not properly selected during decoration, formaldehyde will continue to evaporate from the boards and furniture, causing varying degrees of pollution to our living space.

Every family that is renovating their home knows to choose environmentally friendly building materials, but they don’t know how to choose them.

01. Weight of the board

First, different materials can weigh different materials. Furthermore, a board's weight is also related to factors like density and moisture content. Finally, simply judging a board's quality based on its weight is inappropriate. Choosing the right board requires considering its various characteristics and your own needs.

The core and middle boards of Penghong board are mainly made of native poplar wood (also known as "golden fir" in some markets) grown in the alpine forest area north of 45 degrees north latitude. It has a growth cycle of more than 30 years, high density, hard material and stronger nail holding power.

02. Smooth and flat cut surface

Standard eco-board materials are made of pressed solid wood. The joints between the wood in the middle are very tight and the cut surface is smooth and flat. However, the internal material of counterfeit eco-board materials is very rough, with gaps in the middle, and are prone to warping and deformation. If non-environmentally friendly glue is used in the board, it will bring harm to the home environment.

Penghong board has advanced production technology and refined production division of labor. From raw material selection to finished product packaging, there are 46 complete processes. It is processed and manufactured using top domestic and foreign equipment to comprehensively improve the environmental friendliness of the products and ensure the stability of the product structure.

03. Appearance color

Good ecological boards use high-quality ecological paper veneer with bright colors, clear texture, and real touch. They do not fade, are resistant to high temperatures, and the patterns remain unchanged over the years, still looking like new.

Penghong board facings use high-pressure base paper produced by Germany's Schattdecor, the world's largest decorative paper manufacturer. It has clear texture and good weather resistance. The impregnated paper has good flexibility, high strength, moisture resistance, wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

04. Cross-section

The cross section of the board should be neat and clean, and the internal structure of the board can be seen through the cross section, which is one of the important evidences for detecting the authenticity of the material in the board.

Penghong board uses double middle plate technology, undergoes 5 times of hot pressing, and is assembled into a 9-layer structure. It is not easy to deform or crack, has extremely strong seismic resistance and shock absorption performance, and has good stability.

05. The board has no pungent smell

The biggest feature of genuine E0 board is that it is environmentally friendly. Even after being sawed, the board still has more of the smell of the original wood, and there is no pungent odor.

Penghong board uses independently developed environmentally friendly resin glue with a unique formula and scientific feed ratio. After testing by national authoritative departments, the formaldehyde emission is ≤0.3mg/l, which is better than the national E0 standard of formaldehyde emission ≤0.5mg/l.
