Furniture is the highlight of home decoration and also the most expensive part, so it has become the focus of people's attention. There are three important factors that determine the quality of furniture: base material, finish, and edge banding.
The quality of edge banding determines the service life of furniture, as well as its aesthetics and environmental health.
So what is edge banding?
Edge banding is the process of pasting and decorating the edges of wooden furniture panels, which is done by pasting edge banding strips.
What is edge banding?
Furniture edge banding is a material used to protect, decorate and beautify the cross-section of furniture panels. It can make a piece of furniture appear to have clear wood grain and colorful overall effects.
Why do furniture need edge banding?
Just one image shows the importance of edge banding. Before edge banding, the base material inside the board is not covered, affecting the appearance. After edge banding, the outer contour of the board is surrounded, and the overall effect is more obvious and more beautiful.
Besides aesthetics, the more important function of edge banding is its protective function. Edge banding can seal the cross section of the board, protecting the board from damage caused by adverse factors (mainly moisture) during use and the environment, preventing moisture from invading the board and causing deformation of the base material, and can play a role in strengthening the board.
What types of edge banding are there?
Edge banding includes PVC wood grain edge banding, ABS edge banding and melamine edge banding.
PVC wood grain edge banding is made by printing ink onto a PVC substrate, then rolling on a UV lacquer and curing it. The PVC wood grain edge banding has a very good imitation effect, almost close to the board, and the printing is also rich in layering.
ABS resin is one of the most advanced materials in the world. Edge banding made from it is free of calcium carbonate, resulting in a bright, smooth, and non-whitened furniture. However, its production cost is high, and its market price is double that of PVC edge banding of the same specification.
Melamine edge banding is what we often call paper edge banding. Its advantages are good adhesion and it is not easy to stretch or deform when exposed to heat or cold. Its disadvantages are also obvious. It is brittle and easy to break, and is often damaged during furniture production and transportation.
How to identify the quality of edge banding?
First, check whether the surface is smooth and flat, and whether there are any spots. If there are spots or fine pinholes, it may be made of recycled PVC.
2. Check whether the back of the edge banding is flat. You can use a flat blade to clamp the edge banding horizontally to see if it is straight. If it is not straight, thick glue lines will appear on both sides of the edge banding.
The third is to scratch the edge banding with your fingernails or other tools. If damage occurs, the surface wear resistance and hardness of the edge banding do not meet the standards, indicating that the quality of the edge banding is unqualified.
The edge banding is made of PVC, which is lighter and easier to process. It has the following obvious advantages:
①Good physical properties, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and strong wear resistance. The surface is smooth without bubbles, no stretch marks, and good gloss.
②Good hardness, can effectively prevent damage caused by scratches, collisions, etc.
③Good waterproof performance, can effectively prevent moisture and mildew.
④Good flexibility. When folded back and forth by hand, the edge strip does not break and there are no cracks on the surface. It maintains its original shape after the pressure disappears.
The surface of the edge banding is decorated with wood grain, cloth grain and other patterns, with a soft luster, and has the realism and three-dimensional sense of wood. The front and back are flat, the thickness is uniform, and it does not turn white or fade. It is highly coordinated with the overall color of the finished furniture. When used in conjunction with the board, the overall effect is more obvious. It is an ideal auxiliary material for furniture.
