The ups and downs of the artificial board industry: Plywood

2025-10-08

In the 1950s, plywood was the material of choice for designers like Arne Jacobsen and Charles and Ray Eames. Today, after decades of evolution, plywood continues to play a vital role in the building materials and home furnishings sectors, as a commonly used home decor material and one of the three major types of wood-based panels.

So what kind of board is plywood? And how has it developed in my country? Below, Xiaozhou will answer these questions one by one, and together we will explore the bumpy "life" of plywood.

Definition of plywood

The ups and downs of the life of artificial boards

Plywood, also known as multi-layer board, is a three- or multi-layered material made by peeling wood segments into veneers or planing wood into veneers, then gluing them together with adhesive. It typically uses an odd number of veneers, with the fibers of adjacent layers glued perpendicular to each other. Common plywood types include three-ply and five-ply boards. They improve wood utilization and are a major way to conserve wood. They are used in aircraft, ships, trains, automobiles, construction, and packaging. Typical specifications are 1220 x 2440 mm, with thicknesses ranging from 3/5/9/12/15/18 mm. Key species include beech, camphor, willow, poplar, and eucalyptus.

The origin of plywood

The ups and downs of the life of artificial boards

Plywood is the oldest traditional product in the wood-based panel industry, with its earliest use dating back 3,500 years. Artisans of that time used hand saws to saw wood from precious tree species into small veneer sheets for use in high-end furniture for kings and royalty. Through continuous development, plywood production officially began in Germany in 1850.

Plywood in China

The ups and downs of the life of artificial boards

China's plywood industry began in the 1920s and can be roughly divided into three stages:

01. Old China

Starting in the 1920s, foreign businesses began establishing small plywood mills in China, importing German equipment and using Northeastern basswood as the primary material and blood glue as the adhesive. By 1949, China's total plywood production reached approximately 16,900 cubic meters.

02. After the founding of New China

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in order to adapt to the needs of national economic recovery and development, the people's government successively merged and reorganized small plywood factories and built a number of comprehensive wood processing enterprises.

In May 1958, the country launched the "Great Leap Forward" climax, which promoted the development of China's plywood industry to a certain extent, but then fell into stagnation for a time.

03. After the Reform and Opening Up

In the 1990s, as China transitioned from a planned economy to a market economy, key state-owned plywood companies began to suffer declining returns or even losses, leading to a gradual decline in production. In the 21st century, the number of plywood companies in China surged to over 6,000, with production reaching 35.6156 million cubic meters in 2007, making China the world's largest plywood producer.
