In recent years, oriented strand board (OSB) has quietly emerged in the home furnishing industry, with some design-focused furniture companies also rushing to use it in their furniture production. For example, "City Window" Furniture held a press conference in Dongguan, announcing its use of OSB in furniture, leading the trend toward green furniture. Hebei's "Bluebird" Furniture has also been using imported OSB in its furniture, achieving strong sales and gradually gaining market share.

A key reason why OSB hasn't been widely accepted and produced in China is that businesses and users lack a clear understanding of its properties and uses. With the increase in OSB production companies in recent years, and with the intensification and widespread promotion of OSB, OSB has gradually been applied to home improvement, wooden construction, packaging, and furniture manufacturing. Baidu searches for OSB alone yield approximately 1.7 million results for the Chinese term "oriented strand board." Judging from its market performance, OSB's growth momentum cannot be underestimated.
Basic characteristics of OSB
OSB's raw materials primarily consist of small-diameter, fast-growing thinnings of coniferous and hardwood trees, such as pine, poplar, eucalyptus, and fir. This wide variety of raw materials allows for the production of large panels. The manufacturing process involves drying, gluing, directional laying, and hot-pressing geometrically shaped shavings (typically 50-80 mm long, 5-20 mm wide, and 0.45-0.6 mm thick). Compared to other man-made board production methods, OSB is technically more complex and requires significant infrastructure investment, primarily using imported equipment. Furthermore, high-quality OSB production typically utilizes a continuous flatbed press, requiring at least several hundred million yuan in start-up capital, making it a high barrier to entry.

OSB's superior performance
Compared with plywood, MDF, blockboard and other types of boards, OSB has a smaller linear expansion coefficient, better stability, uniform material, and higher screw holding force; because its shavings are arranged in a certain direction, its longitudinal bending strength is much greater than the transverse one, so it can be used as a structural material and as a load-bearing component; in addition, it can be sawed, sanded, planed, drilled, nailed, filed and other processes like wood, making it a good material for building structures, interior decoration and furniture manufacturing.
Wide application of OSB
As the most promising wood-based panel material of the future, OSB boasts a broad range of applications and development potential. This product is primarily used in the following applications: flooring, walls, and roofing; I-beams; structural insulation panels; packaging boxes; pallets and storage boxes; shelving; industrial tabletops; hardwood flooring cores; decorative siding; in-situ concrete forming forms; container flooring; bowling alleys, and more. After processing, it can replace blockboard, plywood, five-ply board, formwork, fireproof board, decorative panels, and MDF. It can also be used as lining between solid wood flooring and studs, as retaining walls in construction, as trench forms, and as padding. After applying a veneer (either veneer or melamine paper), OSB can be used as furniture panels, drawer bottoms, cabinet dividers, floor boards, bed boards, and more.
More possibilities with OSB
For designers, understanding new materials is essential. OSB manufacturing technology is now mature, and when designing board structures, designers can tailor their needs to create smooth surfaces ready for painting and veneer application; dyed wood shavings can be used for paving, creating a decorative effect; or larger wood shavings can be used as a surface laminate, creating a natural wood feel and decorative texture to suit different design requirements. As early as a few years ago at the Cologne Materials Fair in Germany, furniture designers used this type of OSB in furniture designs, finished with varnish, creating a unique effect.

Solid wood slice OSB board
Product name: Solid wood slice OSB board
Raw materials: Australian pine
Adhesive: PMDI isocyanate adhesive
Formaldehyde emission limit: Formaldehyde-free level (enterprise standard ≤ 0.03mg/m³)
Origin: Tancheng, Shandong, China
Product features: environmentally friendly and safe, stable structure, strong impact resistance, not easy to deform, easy to process, and widely used
Relying on the first complete Siempelkamp OSB production line in China, solid wood sliced OSB boards are made from logs sourced from beautiful Australian forests. Long shavings are processed and evenly mixed with PMDI glue as an adhesive, then applied in a directional manner. Formaldehyde is added throughout the production process, resulting in healthy, environmentally friendly, and high-performance finished products. Furthermore, customized products with varying specifications and performance characteristics can be produced according to customer needs. For example, flame-retardant OSB boards with flame retardant properties not only ensure a green and healthy home environment, but also ensure residential safety, keeping people away from the "toxic" aspects of home life.
