The choice of board materials in home decoration is of paramount importance, and there are many types of board materials on the market, such as fiberboard, fireproof board, lightweight wall board, etc. Only by mastering the systematic board classification can you correctly choose the type of board that suits you. The following is a more specific board classification, I hope it can help everyone.
1. Solid wood board
As the name suggests, solid wood boards are wood panels made from intact wood. These boards are durable, with natural grain, and are an excellent choice for interior decoration. However, due to their high cost and demanding construction process, their use in interior decoration is limited. Solid wood boards are generally categorized by the material they are made from; there is no standardized specification.
2. Splint
Plywood, also known as veneer and commonly known in the industry as thin core board, is made from three or more layers of one-millimeter-thick veneer or sheet material glued together and hot-pressed. It is currently the most commonly used board type for handmade furniture. Plywood is generally available in six sizes: 3cm, 5cm, 9cm, 12cm, 15cm, and 18cm (1cm is equal to 1mm).
3. Decorative panels
Decorative panels, commonly known as panels, are made by precisely planing solid wood into thin veneers approximately 0.2mm thick. Using plywood as a base, these panels are then glued together to create a single-sided decorative panel. This unique form of plywood, with a thickness of 3mm, is a premium decorative material, distinct from conventional oil-based finishes.
4. Blockboard
Blockboard, commonly known in the industry as core board, is made from two single-board panels glued together and pressed together. Core board is cheaper than thin-core board and is a relatively inexpensive board type. Its vertical bending strength (determined by the direction of the core material) is weak, but its transverse bending strength is high.
5. Particleboard
Particleboard is a thin board made from wood chips, infused with glue and additives, and then pressed. Based on the pressing method, it can be divided into two categories: extruded particleboard and flat-pressed particleboard. The main advantage of this type of board is its extremely low price. However, its disadvantage is also obvious: its extremely low strength. It is generally not suitable for large furniture or furniture with high mechanical requirements.
6. Density board
Density fiberboard, also known as fiberboard, is a man-made board made from wood or other plant fibers, coated with urea-formaldehyde resin or other suitable adhesives. Boards are categorized by density into high-density fiberboard (HDF), medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and low-density fiberboard (LDF). Due to its softness, impact resistance, and ease of reprocessing, MDF is a popular material for furniture production abroad. However, because national standards for high-density fiberboard are several times lower than international standards, the quality of MDF in my country still needs to be improved.
7. Fireproof board
Fireproof board is a decorative panel made from siliceous or calcareous materials, mixed with a certain proportion of fiber, lightweight aggregate, adhesive, and chemical additives, and then autoclaved. It is a new material that is increasingly used, not only for its fireproofing properties. However, the construction of fireproof board requires a high level of adhesive, and high-quality fireproof board is more expensive than decorative panels. Fireproof board is generally available in thicknesses of 0.8mm, 1mm, and 1.2mm.
8. Melamine board
Melamine board, or melamine-impregnated paper-faced wood-based panel, is a decorative board made by soaking colored or textured paper in a melamine resin adhesive, drying it until it solidifies, then applying it to particleboard, medium-density fiberboard, or hardboard, and heat-pressing it. Melamine board is a wall decoration material. Some people are using melamine board to impersonate laminate flooring for floor decoration, which is inappropriate.
The above board classifications are for reference only. When choosing, you should also pay attention to other details. For example, if the board quality is not up to standard, the formaldehyde content may exceed the standard, and the waterproofness may be poor. Therefore, if you are using a renovation company, you should inquire with them before the renovation and ask them to inspect all the auxiliary materials after they are in place. If they look black and the edges still fall apart when you press them with your hands, it is recommended to replace them immediately. The same goes for plywood. The appearance should be clean and dense. Plywood is generally thin, and if you feel it is tough enough when you press it with your hands, we recommend using it.
However, even with detailed knowledge posts, many novices who are decorating for the first time still cannot distinguish the quality of building materials. Therefore, the editor still recommends that everyone choose more branded products. After all, brands must have a good reputation, and the quality and service are relatively guaranteed, so consumers can buy with confidence!
