How safe is flame retardant OSB board? Data tells you the truth

2025-10-06

When a fire breaks out, how much time do we have to escape? 10 minutes? 5 minutes?

In reality, the "golden time" for fire escape is only 90 seconds! With such a short window, when a fire breaks out, how can we effectively suppress the flames? How can we slow the spread of flames? How can we minimize the release of toxic and harmful gases from decorative materials? These are the keys to gaining more time to escape.

To prevent problems before they occur, reduce the harm caused by toxic smoke, and save more lives, we need safer, more professional, and better fire-retardant panels for interior decoration to leave as much time and conditions as possible for escape.

Recently, we visited Qiannianzhou's lab to conduct various tests on its newly developed flame-retardant OSB board. How does it truly perform? Can it prevent fires and save lives? Let's take a look!

Appearance review

Compared with other boards, the formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS board is not smooth. The surface slices are crisscrossed, with clear texture and a strong wood feel. You can even see an entire forest on a single piece of wood, which is more like an abstract painting.

It's said that this crisscross pattern is the essence of the craftsmanship of oriented strand board (OSB). Oriented strand board (OSB) is a board that is laid in a crisscross pattern, with the core layer arranged horizontally and the surface layer arranged vertically. The surface particles are oriented along the length or width of the board. This crisscross pattern restructures the wood grain structure and eliminates the effects of internal wood stress on processing. Solid wood chipboard (OSB) performs better than ordinary particleboard, with significantly improved nail holding power and moisture resistance.

The thickness of the board directly affects its flatness and performance. We tested the thickness twice on-site, achieving 12mm and 11.9mm (accounting for measurement error), which is consistent with the marked dimensions. In fact, due to the varying needs of home improvement and construction, formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS boards can be customized to meet diverse consumer demands.

Fire retardant test

To understand the fire-retardant properties of formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS board, testers used a torch to burn both standard and flame-retardant OSB shavings. Comparing the burning results, it was found that both boards burned under the powerful torch. When the torch was discontinued, the standard shavings continued to ignite, with the fire spreading. However, the flames on the formaldehyde-free flame-retardant OBS board shavings ceased immediately after the torch was discontinued, and did not spread.

The test shows that the flame retardant performance of flame retardant OSB board is very excellent, which can effectively curb and slow down the spread of fire and prevent fire from occurring.

A new generation of flame-retardant OSB board, made of imported pine planed into sheets, changes the traditional coating/immersion process of large boards and adopts a small-piece spraying method. Up to 120 three-dimensional nozzles spray at high speed. The flame retardant penetrates into every tiny pore, perfectly reaching B1 grade and being safer.

Stability testing

As a building material, the stability of the board is also very important. Only when it is strong, durable and not easy to deform can a more perfect decorative effect be guaranteed.

Therefore, we also tested the flatness and bearing capacity of flame-retardant OSB boards. Professional instrumentation confirmed that flame-retardant OSB boards can withstand 360N. This exceptional bearing capacity is inseparable from our state-of-the-art production line and manufacturing process. Flame-retardant OSB boards are manufactured using advanced German Industry 4.0 automated production lines, operating at high temperatures and high pressures to ensure static bending strength and bonding strength, ensuring durability and resistance to deformation.

At the same time, we measured the appearance of the board, which was flat and uniform, with small density deviation and appearance thickness deviation, which facilitates construction and ensures construction quality.

Waterproof test

The most feared thing about boards is moisture after long-term use, especially in relatively humid environments such as kitchens. Moisture can not only cause deformation and bending of boards, but also easily breed mold, shortening the service life of the boards and being detrimental to the health of users.

We use the water absorption thickness expansion test to test the moisture resistance of flame-retardant OSB boards. First, prepare 6 samples of the same specifications, and measure and mark the thickness of each sample in detail.

Six samples were placed in water for 24 hours. The 24-hour water absorption expansion rate compared to the original thickness was only 3.2%, far below the national standard of 20%. Flame-retardant OSB board has excellent moisture resistance and is suitable for various humid environments.

The reason for such excellent moisture-proof performance is that the MDI glue used is not easily soluble in water. During the hot pressing process, the MDI glue reacts chemically with the water molecules in the wood, effectively preventing moisture from entering the core material. It is very suitable for use in indoor spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms that have special requirements for waterproofing and moisture-proofing.

Formaldehyde test

In recent years, news reports of illnesses caused by excessive formaldehyde levels have frequently trended, leading to a growing emphasis on the environmental performance of home building materials. To conduct formaldehyde testing, we conducted a professional laboratory test using a specialized climate chamber method on flame-retardant OSB boards.

The samples after equilibrium treatment were edge-sealed and then placed in a 1 m³ climate chamber with a temperature of (23±0.5)℃, relative humidity of (50±3)%, air flow rate of (0.1-0.3) m/s and air exchange rate of (1.0±0.05) h-1.

The air in the chamber is periodically extracted and passed through an absorption bottle filled with distilled water. The formaldehyde in the air is dissolved in the water. The extraction is periodic until the formaldehyde concentration in the air in the climate chamber reaches a stable state.

After obtaining the formaldehyde sample, we conducted a comparative test using distilled water, reacting it with a 0.4% acetylacetone solution (volume ratio) and a 20% ammonium acetate solution (mass ratio). Both were then placed in a digitally displayed constant-temperature water bath, set to 60°C, for ten minutes.

After one hour of storage in the dark, absorbance was measured using a visible spectrophotometer, revealing a formaldehyde concentration of 0.01 mg/m³. This exceptional environmental performance is due to the flame-retardant OSB board's use of a new-generation, formaldehyde-free MDI adhesive. The glue contains no formaldehyde, and no formaldehyde is added during the board manufacturing process, ultimately reducing formaldehyde emissions.

Evaluation Summary--

When it comes to fire, prevention is more important than relief. Reducing fire occurrences and minimizing loss of life and property requires heightened fire awareness and, even more importantly, the protection of high-quality, safe decorative materials. Flame-retardant OSB board offers significant advantages in fire resistance. It utilizes a new, environmentally friendly phosphorus-nitrogen composite flame retardant to minimize smoke and toxic emissions during board combustion. Its advanced small-piece spraying process eliminates open flames before they occur.

After evaluation, it was found that the flame-retardant OSB board uses imported MDI glue, does not contain formaldehyde, is environmentally friendly and safe; it has ultra-high strength, is strong and durable, and has a high pressure-bearing capacity; the water absorption thickness expansion rate is extremely low, and the moisture-proof performance is excellent.

Flame-retardant OSB boards can be widely used in public places and home interior decoration. They are a new generation of practical safety protection furniture boards in the building materials and home furnishing industry!
