Experience in choosing quality differences of ecological boards

2025-10-18

Eco-boards are made by pressing melamine decorative paper onto solid wood panels (blockboard or multi-layer board) at high temperatures. Compared to traditional products, eco-boards are environmentally friendly, safe, low-carbon, and paint-free, making them highly sought after by carpenters and home furnishing manufacturers. In the past two years, a large number of eco-boards have appeared on the market, with a wide range of prices and varying quality, making it difficult for consumers to choose.

Two situations that affect the cost of ecological boards

1. Surface paper

It can be divided into two types: ink-coated paper and pigmented paper, also known as imported paper and domestic paper. Ink-coated paper is brightly colored, resembles raw wood, and contains a high content of triamine, making it fade-resistant and providing a stronger three-dimensional effect. This also means it's more expensive. Pigmented paper is significantly superior, costing only half the price of imported paper. Small factories generally use pigmented paper to reduce costs. Eco-boards are made entirely of imported ink-coated paper, which is durable and fade-resistant.

2. Raw materials

Whether it's square, bark-like, hollow, or cavitated, eco-friendly board directly impacts its final price. Whether compared to traditional blockboard with decorative panels and paint or particleboard and MDF, eco-friendly board offers compelling reasons to choose. You get what you pay for, and consumers should be discerning. Don't waste your money on quality products.

How to choose better products

1. Environmental protection

Eco-board, as the name suggests, is not environmentally friendly. Currently, manufacturers in this field can control it to E0 at most, but E1 eco-board is already quite environmentally friendly and suitable for use in all situations.

2. Check the flatness

Testing method: In a dimly lit area, observe the longest side (2.44 meters) at a 45-degree angle to see if there are any unevenness, and whether the three seams and sanding marks on the surface are obvious. This is not a hard standard, but it reflects a manufacturer's process capabilities.

3. Look at carbonization

Check the surface for dry or wet spots, which is called carbonization in home decoration. For example, if there are shiny spots or blocks on the surface of the board, it will turn black over time, or the surface will appear like paint fading. These are all dry or wet spots. These reflect the factory's mastery of technology and are also one of the important issues reflecting the quality of the board.

4. Look at the fading

Paper fades. Ink-coated paper is relatively easy to fade and has a stronger three-dimensional effect. Colored paper is much worse (like the difference between paint and coating). Testing method: Stack two boards, staggered, and expose them to the sun for a few hours. Observe the lower board for any color difference.

5. Check for cracks

The cracking and bubbling of the board are definitely caused by the bonding strength and base material. There is no reason for it. It can be seen from the perspective.

6. Look at the paper

Checking if the paper is completely solid is like checking if rice is not fully cooked. You can tell if the surface is not resistant to stains by feeling soft to the touch, like it's cottony, or like it's covered in a fog. Ideally, it should feel like metal. To test: Apply shoe polish, rouge, or a grease pen to the surface for a few minutes and see if it can be completely wiped off.

7. Detection of thickness difference of the whole board

Testing method: Use a caliper to measure the thickness of multiple points on an eco-board. An error of 0.6mm is normal, but the requirements can be relaxed during home decoration.

8. Check if it is deformed

Deformation of the panels reflects the manufacturer's process capabilities and indicates insufficient static bending strength. Generally speaking, slight deformation of the top two sheets of panels in each package is normal before the finished product is made. Any deformation after the wardrobe or finished product (excluding large swing doors) is a quality issue. Inspection method: Visual inspection.
