In the cold winter, staying at home has become a normal thing. Under the influence of the epidemic this year, many people are also paying attention to housing purchase policies, real estate company dynamics or decoration knowledge.
Because home is the goal that everyone strives for, and home decoration is not a simple matter. Furniture is an important part of decoration. The first and most important thing to solve when making furniture is the selection of materials. Should we choose particle board or multi-layer board?
Let’s take a look together below!
01. Look at the raw materials
Solid wood multilayer boards are made from large-diameter peeled veneers, which are the closest to solid wood, making the quality of the finished boards easier to control. Particle board, on the other hand, often uses scraps and sawdust, sometimes mixed with waste cardboard, broken old doors and windows, and old flooring. This makes it difficult to control the raw materials, resulting in varying quality in the finished boards.
02. Look at the physical properties
In terms of physical properties, solid wood multilayer boards, constructed by applying pressure horizontally and vertically with vertically layered veneers, exhibit excellent physical properties due to the uniform stress distribution. Furthermore, after high-temperature hot pressing, the internal shrinkage and expansion coefficient of the multilayer boards is very low, resulting in less deformation and cracking, which increases product quality stability. However, particle board, due to its structural characteristics, lacks these performance advantages.
03. Look at the production process
Solid wood multilayer boards offer stable physical properties and are easy to process. In furniture production, they can be quickly processed using specialized machinery or by individual carpenters using tools like hand saws or precision saws. They are also less susceptible to chipping and cracking. Particle board, on the other hand, is generally manufactured by large manufacturers using extensive equipment due to its unstable properties, making its quality difficult to guarantee on the market.
04. Look at the nail holding force
In terms of nail holding strength, solid wood multilayer boards offer superior nail holding power. The nail holding power of a board is largely determined by its physical properties. Due to its unique manufacturing process, solid wood multilayer boards maintain their nail holding power even after repeated assembly and disassembly. This is not the case with particle board, which generally struggles to maintain nail holding power. Repeated assembly and disassembly can easily cause the entire furniture to loosen, seriously impacting its lifespan.
05. Look at environmental performance
The use of eco-friendly glue and the low amount of glue used in multi-layer boards are achieved by applying glue layer by layer to the boards, ensuring quality control and better environmental protection. By using environmentally friendly plant-based glue, the environmental performance of solid wood multi-layer boards exceeds national standards. This is not the case with particle board, which is a type of particle board and uses a large amount of glue. To reduce costs, cheaper urea-formaldehyde glue is often used. This greatly reduces the environmental impact of the finished board and makes it difficult to guarantee environmental protection.
06. Look at market trends
Most people assume particle board is the mainstream, while multi-layer board is the material of smaller furniture manufacturers. This isn't the case. As of now, internationally renowned brands use several times more solid wood multi-layer board annually than many domestic particle board manufacturers. Solid wood multi-layer board boasts more innovative designs and colors, and its professional R&D teams consistently stay ahead of the market. Meanwhile, some domestic brands, when using particle board, primarily operate domestically, not internationally, and their design and color updates often lag behind the market.
Solid wood furniture boards are superior to particle boards in all aspects and are naturally more suitable as materials for making furniture.
